Food Truck Friday Brings the Food to Phoenix

by Russ Lyonsotheby
Already popular in places like Southern California and Portland, Oregon, and appearing for a few weeks around Derby time in Louisville stationary food trucks are relatively new to Phoenix. Unlike the roving food trucks that you might experience in Chicago or New York City, a stationary food truck experience involves many food trucks, from various restaurants, lining up in one area so people can come and have their choice of vendors.

For people who work in the area, whether it be as an attorney or real estate agent selling Phoenix homes or other Phoenix real estate, the idea of going to the same few restaurants for lunch each day can be tedious and boring. While many people do opt to bring their own lunches, the idea of having a whole host of new food to choose from once a week is quite tempting. Plus, it gives people a chance to try cuisine from a vendor that they likely would not meet up with had the truck not been part of the parked caravan.

The Food Truck Friday event occurs weekly from 11am-1pm at the Phoenix Public Market, and the trucks line up at Central Avenue and McKinley Street. The event started thanks to the Phoenix Street Food Coalition, whose goal is to increase the ease with which the people of Phoenix can stop and grab a bite to eat on the street.

One of the best things about Food Truck Friday is the wide variety of restaurants that participate. There really is something for everyone and every type of food craving that people might have on a particular Friday. Although the vendors may change from week to week, typically you can find hot dogs, vegetarian sandwiches, and french fries, among other treats.

The idea of food trucks allows for the sellers to have less overhead and to pass those savings on to the customers. Such savings can be found at Food Truck Friday, where a meal can be had for around $5 if you make your selections carefully. For those who do pack a lunch, a dessert or afternoon snack may also be able to found in one of the trucks as it is common to see vendors who sell sweet treats.

Although as the summer months come and the temperatures rise, the tendency is to stay inside in the air conditioning, it is worth venturing out once a week on Food Truck Friday to try out some new cuisine or get something from a favorite vendor. It is truly a great Friday pick-me-up and an excellent start to the weekend.
