Sometimes I must be brutally honest
It is not a pleasant thing to do but I could not live with myself if I didn't.
On this and other networks I had several encounters with newbies that were using the chat messenger or a message to ask my advice to earn money quick. Some even used the messenger to say 'Hi" followed by a links and 'please join'.
My response is normally that using the chat to send offers to people you do not know is not professional and that they will accomplish nothing.
If they have not switched me off by than I refer to the importance of branding your self and building connections with others and sometime I refer them to articles that might help them.
I some cases they told me personal things like they needed money desperately and fast for a sick family member, facing the fact they must sell their home, and other sad stories. Many of them said they were posting links all day and did not make any sales.
I really feel sorry for people in such desperate situations.
In those cases I tell them what they probably do not want to hear, that it takes 2-3 years of hard work to build a business for free from scratch and earn decent money from it.
My advice to them is: use your online time to find a regular job. And to use their spare time to start educating themselves in on-line marketing and to start building their network if they are really determent to earn a living on-line.

@pplcheryl63: Yesterday, one of our 'celebrity' member sent me a testimonial - perhaps, irked by one of my most recent articles. I shot back, "Where's the testimonial?" because the so-called testimonial was a pure spam.

I get the same thing Paula. I had someone spam me in a contact request. I accepted the request and immediately sent them a PM explaining that throwing links at people is unprofessional and not well received by the person sending the link.
I got an immediate reply back from them...with even more links.

Thanks for your comment Sergio and Fred. This article is shared in my network so others will read your comments as well. I am beginning to see more articles here on apsense about good business ethics and correct behaviour on social media. Still outnumbered by the spam legions and program hoppers but it is a good sign.

Note: sometime people tell sobby stories or send sobby emails that are not true. Sometimes referred to as Nigerian scam or fraude. It is usually a request to help transfer money. Make sure you always report those to the the admin of that network. Or forward it if you are not sure.

This is a very delicate part of Internet Marketing in any of its aspects and we certainly need to deal with it in the less hurting way.
Even though reality can break hearts and sometimes even faith, it's better than giving false promises, I couldn't even sleep at night if I told someone he's going to get rich sooner than he thinks only to know that this person is going to bump straight into a wall later.
It is very hard to see desperate people trying to find quick solutions and seeking for

Telling it like it is. Calling a spade a spade. The truth is sometimes very hard for people to accept because it's painful and, in some cases, very painful. I've also been spammed with "join this program" links using the chat function but thank God they have reduced after I did what you have mentioned in your article: telling the culprits that "using the chat to send offers to people you do not know is not professional and that they will accomplish nothing."
