What Are Negative Calories?
The thought behind negative calories is that certain foods could take more energy to digest than they provide in the body. Without exaggeration this idea took the diet industry by storm. The approach that you could eat from a list of "magic foods" and NOT put on weight but actually counterbalance some of the calories you gain from other foods certainly has tremendous appeal.
The bad news is that all foods contain calories; some more than others. Your body is one of the most efficient engines known to man. So efficient, in fact. that in some respects it works against you. The calories you ingest in even the lightest foods create much more energy than is required to digest them.
Scientists Have Discovered One Negative Calorie Food
To really use more energy than a food provides, you have to eat cardboard. Cardboard is the only edible substance known to the civilised world which is 100% cellulose. We humans lack the enzymes to break it down. Cows have a digestive system which would allow them to easily live on cardboard without any problems.In the human body, the process of moving the cardboard through your digestive system would require a small but measurable amount of energy. The energy expended in digesting the cardboard would create a true negative calorie food.
Even though cardboard is the only truly negative calorie food so far discovered, I naturally find it difficult to recommend a cardboard diet.
What Negative Calorie Foods Are Not
You cannot neutralize calories in food you have already eaten. For
instance you cannot eat a piece of cake and then eat 7 celery stalks to
create a calorie balance. Sorry it doesn't work like that.
