Yoga vs Pilates
Yoga and Pilates are two popular methods of keeping fit and health in today's stressful world.
Probably the biggest diffence between the two is that Yoga is an ancient Eastern philosophy concentrating more on the mind, while Pilates is a modern Western technique based on body awareness and physical training.
The aim of Yoga is to free the movement of energy through your body by stretching, moving and meditation. In this way, you can train your mind to remove tension, thus energizing your body and restoring good health. True Yoga is a way of life, and perfecting breathing and various postures results in a healthy mental and physical state.
Pilates is the more physical discipline. It was developed by Joseph Pilates after World War I as a way to rehabilitate soldiers injured in the war. It comprises of a series of unique exercises designed to stretch and strengthen the body. Sometimes machines are used to create resistance, otherwise mat exercises in unusual positions work the body to the greatest health advantage.
The choice of which method will work best is totally up the the individual. The more spiritual may prefer Yoga, while those who simply want an effective workout may prefer Pilates. The best way is to try a class of each and decide for yourself.
