What to Look For In RO Water Filter?

by Water Purifier Anjan Sengupta (Service Head)
Doctors always recommend that drinking more water can lead to a healthier life. It is not a mystery that water plays a major role in our overall health and well-being. It’s a fact that we all have to stay hydrated for the sake of basic health.

Drinking lots of water is not only good but also a smart choice. However, the quality of water can vary a lot in different geographic areas. Everyone has accepted that no matter where you live, the water has become contaminated which makes it unsafe to consume.

Thinking about how dependent we are on water and how much we need it, the thought of having access to it being anything less than healthy or safe is a cause of concern. If you’re worried about the contaminants in the water, a reverse osmosis or RO water filter is the most powerful resource that can solve the problem. It can help to remove a wider range of contaminants than other types of water filters.

Types of Reverse Osmosis Systems

There are two types of reverse osmosis system which you can use for your home:

Countertop Reverse Osmosis Systems

Countertop systems are basically designed to sit on the countertop or on the ground. They are also known as freestanding reverse osmosis systems, and it is designed to be compact, so you don’t give too much kitchen counter space or have to worry about a complicated installation process.

Undercounter Reverse-Osmosis Systems

You can also call them undersink reverse-osmosis water purifier units because that’s where they’re installed. Undercounter systems are the most common types you can find. They’re easy to use, and once they are installed, all you have to do is turn the faucet on.

They also have a complicated installation process, and the customer will need the help of a professional. However, they can store water in large quantities and are most convenient for daily use.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Reverse Osmosis Filter System
The market for reverse osmosis or RO water systems is quite large and varied. However, to find the right RO filter, you must focus on a few key factors:

Cost

The first question to ask yourself is how much you’re willing to spend. The expensive RO purifiers boast about their stages like ability to filter larger quantities of water, and extra features like autoflush. Some high-end systems also can add more valuable nutrients to the water.

With many types of products available in the market, if you go with a reverse osmosis filter at the lowest end of the price, you might find yourself with cheap materials that don’t last long enough. Many mid-range products will also get the job done for most people’s needs, and the higher-end options can add in nice-to-have features.

Size

Whether you buy a countertop reverse-osmosis system or the one to install under your sink, the available space is an important consideration. If you have limited counter space in your kitchen, then a large reverse-osmosis system will add to the space's clutter. An undercounter RO system has to fit in the space under the sink, so you can’t buy one that is too big.

Amount of Water

Another related factor is how much water a reverse osmosis system can filter. The product for different systems will provide information on how many liters of water a day a system can handle. If you have a small household, it is better to settle for a small RO filter size.

Effectiveness

A reverse osmosis system has a number of stages. This also refers to a number of filters the purifier uses to remove particles. For example, four-stage purifiers include a sediment filter for things like dirt & sand, a carbon filter for chlorine & other chemicals, a reverse-osmosis membrane that helps remove traces of chemicals and a post-carbon filter for any leftover impurities.
