What Should Be The Diet For A High Creatinine Level Patient?

Creatinine levels indicate the healthy or unhealthy functioning of the body. If you are having an imbalance in creatinine levels then it simply means that your kidneys’ lives are in danger. It is also an indication that you should start making changes in your diet especially when you have high creatinine levels.

But what is creatinine?

Creatinine is a breakdown product of the protein=type creatine that is present naturally in the body. The liver is the organ producing this protein-type and transfers to the muscles, the brain, the heart, and kidneys.

Why creatinine levels are important?

Only two tests are classified to know the functioning of kidneys. One is the eGFR test and another is a serum creatinine test.

Before we start discussing the diet plan for creatinine patients, let us take a short tour of creatinine.

What should be the normal range of creatinine levels in blood and urine?

Following will help you in understanding the normal levels of creatinine in blood and urine both:

In blood:

• Men: 0.6 to 1.2 mg/Dl
• Women: 0.5 to 1.1 mg/Dl
• Teenager: 0.5 to 1.0 mg/Dl
• Child: 0.3 to 0.7 mg/Dl
In Urine:
• Men: 107 to 139 mL/min
• Women: 87 to 107 mL/min

What causes the elevation of creatinine levels?

You should know why you are having high creatinine levels and they are:

• Strenuous exercises.
• Overdose of allopathic medicines.
• Energy-boosting supplements.
• Diabetes.
• High blood pressure.
• Thyroid diseases.

What are the symptoms of high creatinine levels?

Following are the symptoms of high creatinine levels:

• Constant feeling of thirst and dehydration.
• Sudden weight gain
• Swelling in different parts of the body, legs, feet and abdominal areas mainly.
• Unexplained shortness of breath.
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Fatigue

What is the ideal diet for a creatinine patient?

The ideal diet for a creatinine patient includes a sensible amount of protein, sodium, potassium, phosphorus and other necessary nutrients required by a human body. During the problem of high creatinine levels, protein intake is restricted but not eliminated. Following is the list of foods that are common during renal diseases:

Vegetables to be consumed once a week:

• Cauliflower
• Cabbage
• Cottage cheese (Paneer)

Vegetables to be consumed once in ten days:

• Bitter gourd
• Carrot

Boiled potatoes

• Oils:
• Mustard oil
• Olive oil
• Rice-bran oil

Vegetables that can be consumed daily:

• Bottle gourd
• Sponge gourd
• Round gourd
• Pointed gourd
• Green pumpkin
• Ridge Gourd

Now let us talk about the common diet chart that we provide to a kidney patient:

Early morning:
• Tea (made of cow milk or double toned milk) with Marigold biscuits.

Breakfast:
• One bowl of salted wheat Dalia or broken wheat.
• The half plate of salted vermicelli

Note: Consume one type of food at a time.

Mid-morning Breakfast:
• Consume either of the fruits mentioned above.

Lunch:
• 2to3 Chapati (wheat flour) or boiled rice with a bowl of vegetables mentioned above.

Evening:
• Half cup of tea with whole wheat biscuits or whole wheat vegetable roll.

Dinner:
• 2to3 chapati with a bowl of vegetables.

Foods to avoid during the treatment:

• Beware about what you eat and what you leave, prohibit yourself from the following types of foods:
• Fried foods like samosa, kachori, mathari, puri, parantha, patties, etc.
• Fruits like mango, bananas, grapes, sapodilla, custard apple, litchi, orange, mausambi.
• Vegetables like zimikand, sweet potato, custard apple, ladyfinger, tomatoes, and green leafy vegetables.
• Processed foods and packaged foods like cheese, pickles, mayonnaise, butter, and sauces.
• Sweetened foods, sugar, Jaggery, jam, jellies, and glucose.
• Dry fruits and nuts.
• Whole milk, ice cream, curd, ghee, dalda.
• Refined cereals like all-purpose flour, pasta, and white bread.
• Bakery products like cakes, pastries, and cookies.

Other precautions that you should take during the treatment:

• Drink a limited amount of water (approx: 1 liter - 1.5 liters).
• Make a fixed time for lunch & dinner.
• Don’t consume any raw vegetables.
• Don’t consume any vegetables with seeds.
• Don’t consume milk directly in raw form, boiled form (if, given).
• Remove the peel and seeds of the fruit.
• Boil vegetables properly before cooking.
• Use Rock salt (3-4 gm per day).
• Use olive/mustard/ rice bran oil (1-3 teaspoon per day).
• Use more of steel utensils for cooking.
