What Is Aluminum Scrap Melting Furnace?

by Luoyang Judian Professional Steel Casting and Rolling Equipment M

An aluminum scrap melting furnace is a type of furnace designed explicitly for melting aluminum scrap to produce molten aluminum. These furnaces are commonly used in recycling facilities or foundries where aluminum scrap is processed and transformed into new aluminum products.

The process of melting aluminum scrap typically involves the following steps.

Collection and sorting: Aluminum scrap is collected from various sources such as manufacturing waste, used aluminum products, or automotive parts. It is then sorted based on its composition and quality.

Preparing the scrap: The collected aluminum scrap is cleaned to remove any foreign materials such as dirt, coatings, or other contaminants. It is important to ensure the quality of the scrap before melting.

Charging the furnace: The prepared aluminum scrap is then set into the melting furnace. The furnace can be either a reverberatory furnace, rotary furnace, or electric induction furnace, depending on the specific requirements and capacity.

Melting process: The furnace is heated to a high temperature, typically above the melting point of aluminum (660.32°C or 1220.58°F). The heat source can be natural gas, oil, electricity, or a combination of these. The scrap aluminum melts and forms a pool of molten aluminum.

Skimming and refining: During the melting process, impurities such as oxides and dross may float to the surface of the molten aluminum. These impurities are skimmed off to improve the quality of the molten metal. Refining agents may also be added to remove other impurities and improve the overall quality of the aluminum.

Sampling and analysis: Periodic samples are taken to analyze the chemical composition and temperature of the molten aluminum. This information is critical to ensure that the desired quality and specifications are met.

Casting or further processing: Once the molten aluminum has reached the desired quality, it can be cast into molds to produce ingots, billets, or other shapes. Alternatively, it can be further processed using techniques such as continuous casting, rolling, extrusion, or fabrication to create various aluminum products.

It's worth noting that the specific details of the aluminum scrap melting furnace can vary depending on the size, capacity, and technology used in the facility. The process described above provides a general overview of the typical steps involved in melting aluminum scrap.
