Types of Sink Wastes One Can Find

by Kritika Agarwal Satisfy our customers
A sink waste sits in the plughole of a sink and is fitted to create a seal in order to prevent water from draining out of the sink. The top of the sink waste is called the shoulder or flange and this is the metal part that one sees in the plughole, the finish on the flange will usually match the finish on the taps of the sink. Sink wastes are generally made to standard sizes in order to fit any sink waste hole and usually come supplied with a specific type of plug, grill or stopper. Bathroom sinks usually have a waste diameter of 32mm while baths, showers and kitchen sinks usually have 40mm.

There are a number of different types and styles of sink waste available for a modern kitchen or bathroom. This can become confusing to a buyer wishing to purchase a sink waste and sometimes off-putting. Buyers should go through a guide to the different types of sink waste that will help them to choose the right style sink waste to suit their chosen kitchen style or bathroom style.

§ Pop-up sink wastes: A pop-up sink waste refers to a type of pipe fitting that joins a sink to a waste pipe at the plughole. These sink wastes incorporate a plug or stopper which is operated with a control. The control on the pop-up sink waste is usually a lever one will pull or a knob one will turn. It is often found behind or on the tap fixture, or it can be attached to the overflow which is usually below the tap, in the sink. To operate the pop-up stopper, the lever is to be pulled up to close the plug and to be pushed down to open it or the knob is to be turned one way to open and the other to close.

§ Plug and chain sink wastes: This is the most traditional form of sink waste which most people are familiar with. This sink waste consists of a plug (made up of either plastic or metal) that is connected to a chain, which can be moved to cover the waste hole or kept on one side when not being used. Plug and chain sink wastes are the most basic wastes available, but be careful as not all sinks are suitable for a plug and chain. Plug and chain sink wastes require a chainstay that is a hole in which the chain in the opposite end to the plug fixes to the sink. Most modern style sinks do not have a chainstay hole.

§ Flip-top sink wastes: Flip-top sink wastes are disc-shaped plugs that are seated inside the waste hole that means if the stopper is rotated water can flow through or can be stopped for filling the basin.

§ Basket strainer wastes: These wastes are common in kitchen sinks as they have a strainer that will prevent food and other waste from blocking the drain of the sink by collecting it before it can pass through the waste. The basket stopper in these wastes can be operated in a similar way to the pop-up sink waste, with control to lower and lift it or it can simply be pulled in and out.

§ Flush grated wastes: These wastes are common in showers or sinks where the wastewater needs to continuously flow away, as these wastes do not fit a stopper or plug.

§ Push-button waste sprung waste or click-clack waste: Push-button waste, sprung waste or click-clack waste, these are the same but are just named different. This type of sink waste is the most popular option, as it has got a simple design making it easy to maintain and use. One can simply push down on the stopper once to close it and push/click it again to open it. There is a wide range of push-button clicker wastes available in the market including easy clean wastes which make removing dirt and hair from the waste easier.
