Becoming a Freemason doesn’t imply that a person has reached the height of their being. It means a continuous desire to gain further knowledge and improvement in all moral, spiritual, ethical and physical aspects. A Freemason reaches the peak after going through different degrees. They start as a newcomer with high potential and end up at a state of near perfection as they become mature with the brotherhood.

When a Freemason becomes a Master Mason, then he is entitled to join the Royal Arch Freemasonry, after a period of four weeks. The members of this Freemasonry are known as Companions and they meet in Chapters.

Royal Arch Mason’s clothing includes aprons, jewels, chains, collars, robes, and sashes. According to 1766 rules, Royal Arch Chapter Apron is worn by Companions and of one fashion and type.

Original Royal Arch Apron

It was used by the Craft with or without having symbolic decorations. It had a similar look to those aprons that were adopted by the “Antients” and “Moderns” in 1766.  The objection was raised by the Craft to the Royal Arch Masons on wearing their typical aprons with just the addition of all the symbols in the Lodges. After that, the Grand Chapter took a decision of stopping their utilization until the Grand Lodge gives approval.

Today’s Royal Arch Apron

Aprons are still worn by the members of Royal Arch in their Chapters but of different type. In the English Royal Arch, a white lambskin apron is worn by the Companions that are 14 to 16 inches wide and 12 to 14 inches deep with an overlap of triangles. It is bordered with crimson and purple with a width of not more than 2 inches.

In the overlap’s center, a triangle of the white skin is made that has a gilt border. And inside the triangle, the three taus are contained by the emblem in gold embroidery. Underneath the overlap, two tassels have been suspended of gold.

Provincial and District Grand Officers Apron

The aprons of Provincial and District Grand Officers have gilt emblems of office or rank within the double circle in which the name of the District or Province, London or overseas is inserted as per the case. The ribbons and backing are of dark blue color.

In the aprons of Grand Officers and Grand Superintendents, the emblem of office is embroidered in the gilt’s center and bordered in purple and double intended crimson in 4 inches width. The ribbons and backing are of dark blue color.
