Silica sand flour and its applications

by Kritika Agarwal Satisfy our customers
Silica is a hard and chemically inert compound, having a high melting point. It is a group of minerals composed of silicon and oxygen and is exists in many different forms. Generally, crystalline forms of silica are quartz and cristobalite that are available both in the form of sand and flour. Silica sand flour is the finely ground silica sand and is commonly used as an abrasive additive in skin care products, soaps, toothpaste, and paints. The flour can be used as filler in a number of pharmaceuticals. It is utilized in foundry work, in ceramic, glass, porcelain, tile and clay production, filtration, etc. It is also used in oil-well cement or geothermal-well cement whenever the cement will be exposed to 230 degrees Fahrenheit temperature or higher. Silica sand flour prevents the loss of strength, or retrogression that oil well cement may experience at these temperatures.

The silica sand flour is produced from the whole grain sand which is first mined, washed, attrition scrubbed, hydraulically sized and dried. Then the dry sand is ground and sized to meet the specific requirements for use.

Available sizes of silica sand flour are given below: -

• Silica Sand Flour (600-1.2 mm)
• Silica Sand Flour (212-250 Micron)
• Silica Sand Flour (250-300 Micron)
• Silica Sand Flour (355-425 Micron)
• Silica Sand Flour (425-600 Micron)
• Silica Sand Flour (63 Micron)
• Silica Sand Flour (75 Micron)
• Silica Sand Flour (100 Micron)

Various uses of silica sand flour are as follows: -

• It is used in construction for mixing with cement.
• It acts as a refractory agent in various types of molding and foundry sands, and for the manufacturing of refractory brick.
• It is used in glassmaking.
• It is used as an abrasive in blasting and scouring sand and in certain types of grinding and polishing materials
• It is used for various types of building products such as roofing tile and sand-lime brick.
• It is used in hydraulic fracturing of oil well reservoirs.

Safety and protection measures that should be taken during the use of silica sand flour: -

Silica sand flour is non-toxic in nature. One should wear a uniform, anti-dusk mask, and eyeglasses during the use of the silica sand flour. It should be placed in ventilated and dry warehouse avoiding rain or sunlight. The product should be packed with the plastic-lined weaved bag. The flour can be kept long with stability as long as it is not affected by moisture and well packed. Damage to the packaging of the silica sand flour during transportation and application should be prevented.
