Jharkhand’s Students’ Initiative to Convert Food Waste into Biogas

by Vivaan Pathak Manager
Biogas generation has been taken to another level by Jharkhand’s students through one of its kind initiatives. Food leftovers in the hostels and messes of Birla Institute of Technology, Sindri will no longer be dumped as the students have come up with a unique initiative of their kind.

Food waste will be leveraged to produce biogas that would be used in cooking. Such biogas plants would be set up on the campus of every engineering college in Jharkhand.

‘Urja Viable Solutions’- the brainchild of 5 B.Tech students, is a visionary start-up that is aimed at producing energy as a key part of sustainable energy production. The project was initiated by 5 bright BIT students named- Adarsh Tirkey, Kumar Aryan, Nitish Kumar, Geet Kumar, and Raj Kumar Singh. It took them some time to complete the groundwork for setting up the plant in their college.

Spoken to last year in December, Kumar Aryan was hopeful that the biogas plant to come into existence by January 2022. They were to make a biogas plant capable of treating 100 kgs of waste every day. Equipment development was taking place in Bengaluru, and the plant is likely to produce 8 kgs of biogas every day.

Kumar Aryan also stated that they are planning to set up similar plants in other hostels for increasing energy self-reliance. The far-sighted step of these 5 BIT students has garnered accolades from all and sundry including companies offering biogas purification plants. Organizations offering hydrogen sulfide scrubbers also term it a welcome move.

Adarsh Tirkey stated that the depleting amount of fossil fuels made them think and encouraged them to come up with the idea. He said that it is high time, we work on exploring alternative energy sources whilst saving existing ones. He also added that the core focus of their start-up was in the renewable energy sector.

“This biogas plant will be the first one made by our company; however, we intend to move towards renewable energy production as a second step. The ultimate objective would be to ensure zero waste while making Birla Institute of Technology an eco-friendly place”, Tirkey added.

The good news is that the start-up is already getting encouragement from every nook and corner and getting sponsored by the BIT Sindri Alumni Association. In the process, they have sanctioned a fund of Rs. 9 lakhs already.
