IgA nephropathy - prognosis, cause, and treatment

by Shipra Sharma Kidney Treatment in Ayurveda
IgA nephropathy, the other name for this disease, is Berger's disease. Immunoglobulin is an antibody that plays a role in this disease. When this antibody, Immunoglobulin, starts accumulating inside the kidneys it gives birth to this disease. Initially, it is just a simple inflammation in the kidneys, but later, it can halt the filtration capacity of the kidney. The course of this disease differs from one person to another. Usually, this disease takes over a year in which it develops slowly inside the organ. Allopathy suggests dialysis or transplant for such a situation, but Ayurveda provides the complete treatment and prognosis of IgA nephropathy

What causes IgA Nephropathy?

Our kidney contains tiny blood vessels that help in the filtration of the waste, excess water, and other toxins from the blood. The waste produced goes to our bladder and comes out of the body through the process of urination. The fresh filtered blood goes to the bloodstream and flows inside the whole body. The antibody immunoglobulin A(IgA) prevents the pathogens from entering our body and also fights infection. But in the condition like IgA nephropathy, this antibody stockpile in the glomeruli and causes inflammation. It eventually affects the kidneys. Due to some unspecified reasons, people who suffer from IgA nephropathy develop abnormal IgA proteins that are unidentified and new to the body to recognize. In return, the patient's body attacks them and forms clusters of proteins known as immune complexes.

These immune complexes later get accumulated in the kidneys and cause damage. This nature of IgA nephropathy makes it an autoimmune disease. The parts of this IgA protein deposits in the center of the glomerulus in the mesangial area. The accumulation of these immune complexes leads to the inflammation and the damage of the glomerulus. It eventually destroys the filtering system, and it later allows the passage of red blood cells and protein into the urine. Patients with respiratory infections like cough and sore throat have a higher circulation of IgA immune complexes. As a result, it ends up depositing in the kidneys, and later, patients with IgA nephropathy ends with symptoms like blood in the urine. Some patients with gastrointestinal infections like flu in the stomach can also experience IgA nephropathy. Genetic factors also play an essential role in this disease.

Signs of IgA Nephropathy

Sometimes this disease may go unnoticed as the symptoms of this disorder do not show up in the early stages. It requires specific tests that help to reveal some microscopic reasons. These signs and symptoms are as follows-

1. You may notice pain in your back. It can happen either one side or on both sides of your back below the ribs.
2. High blood pressure is a symptom associated with all kinds of kidney disorders.
3. Due to the presence of red blood cells in the blood, you will notice urine of color of the tea or cola.
4. Swelling in your feet and hands are also the sign of IgA nephropathy. This condition is also known as edema.
5. The leakage of the protein in the urine makes it foamy.
6. Regular excretion of cola- or tea-colored urine, and presence of blood in your urine, due to heavy exercise or some other infection.

Detection of IgA Nephropathy

It is vital to detect any disease on time as it can turn to something serious if not taken care of. When you begin to notice something abnormal in your body like urine in your blood, you should go for a quick test as it can be a condition of IgA nephropathy. Also, if you're taking some tests and it is continuously showing protein or blood in your urine, this is an alarm of IgA nephropathy. These tests can help you know which kidney disorder you are suffering from -

Kidney biopsy- Kidney biopsy is a procedure in which a special biopsy needle is used to take out a small piece of kidney tissue for its microscopic examination. It is the only way that will help the doctor to confirm IgA nephropathy.

Urine tests- Urine test is the most important thing for kidney patients. The urine can detect all the disorders related to kidneys. The urine tests can detect the presence of blood, and the protein in the urine and the signs of IgA nephropathy can be caught.

Blood tests- A blood test will help the doctor and you to know the increased blood levels of the waste product creatinine. The increased creatinine level shows the presence of kidney disorders in human beings.

Iothalamate clearance test- This is the most widely used process to know whether the kidney is functioning right or not. In this test, 1ml of iothalamate is injected in the blood, and blood samples are taken at an interval of 60, 90, 120, 180, and 240 minutes. This test provides a complete research study on renal function.
