How to trace an IP address and find out about it

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

The Internet Protocol, IP, is a unique address that is assigned to each computer and device connected to the network and which identifies us on the Internet in relation to the rest of the servers and devices connected to it. All these addresses are available to all users and are registered in different databases, which allows us, for example, to easily collect information about these IP addresses.

When we search for an IP address, for example, from a server that has tried to connect to our computer or from a web page through a DNS query, all we will see is a series of digits, separated into 4 groups, which can be go from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. However, although at first glance these addresses do not tell us anything, using tools such as the ones we will see the accurate info, it is possible to get a large amount of information about them.

Obtain your IP manually

A route trace contains information on all intermediate providers between your Internet provider and the services provider. It is used to verify that from the services there is no factor that could affect the correct transfer of data between the services and their Internet connection. A route trace may be requested for support, whenever you report problems related to the connectivity of your services (slow navigation, intermittent, etc.).

Make a trace (Windows)

  1. Go to "Start> Run", type "cmd.exe" and press Enter
  2. (Inside the black screen) type "app SUDOMINIO" and press Enter
  3. NOTE: SUDOMINIO must be replaced by the name of your domain.
  4. (Once the application has finished) Copy the results of the application.

Once the "Mark" option is selected, press the right mouse button (and keep it pressed) while selecting the data resulting from the application, once the data is marked, press Enter.

  • Go to "Start> Run", type "notepad" and press Enter.
  • (Inside notepad) Paste the content by pressing the Ctrl + V keys.
  • (Inside notepad) Go to "File> Save as ..."
  • (Inside notepad) Enter the name that will give the file and press "Save".
  • You can now close notepad.exe and cmd.exe

Send the previously generated text file to support, answering the previously opened case (if any).
