How can a leader help in motivating his team members?

by Justin Langer Content Manager

Motivation is very important. You might not be able to reach your goal or contribute to the best of your abilities, if you lack in motivation. But where do you derive motivation from? At times, self-motivation becomes very difficult, especially under adverse circumstances. Let’s suppose that you are a member of a team, and for some reason, you are not being able to deliver. It’s not due to your lack of technical expertise, but you do not feel motivated enough to contribute to the best of your abilities.

Under such a situation, there can be two outcomes; either you keep on struggling and eventually thrown out of the team, or you find someone, who would motivate and encourage you to pull up your socks and give your hundred percent. This “someone” is the leader. He may not be the designated leader; however, he has the attitude and gesture of one!

How can a Leader Motivate?

Leaders have their own ways of motivating others. Some use aggressive tactics, where they would be highly critical of you and your performance, and would deliberately hit you so that your ego and self-prestige gets hurt. This can trigger a change in your attitude, which in turn would help you to get motivated. On the other hand, there are people who believe in meaningful conversation in order to motivate their team members.

Some would narrate different stories where an individual, despite of all the odds had managed to emerge as victorious. There are hundreds of different ways in which leaders can motivate their peers. However, at the end of the day, it is up to you to decide, how you are going to react to it.

If you have an open mind, you are ready to accept criticism, and most importantly, deep inside you know that something needs to be done to trigger your spirit; in that case, you are likely to come out of this situation. On the other hand, if you have a defensive attitude, in that case, you won’t be able to absorb the words of encouragement which are addressed towards you.

Does Motivation Help?

Motivation can certainly help, as long as you want it. As mentioned, if you are willing to improve your performance and open to all kinds of critical comments or spending time listening to lectures; it can certainly help you.

Motivating a member of his team is one of the main roles of a leader. He can help you overcome the situation you find yourself in

Leaders are the ones people look up to when the chips are down. It is the responsibility of a leader to ensure that all his team members are at the peak of their moral and motivated.
