BIS Certification for Compounded Cattle Feeds

by Aleph India BIS Registration Consultant

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) created a standard for Compounded Cattle Feeds for milk and meat-producing animals in 2009. Pesticides, aflatoxin, and heavy metals are the main sources of pollutants in feed, according to FSSAI. Because the milk and meat generated by cattle might affect the health of customers, commercial feeds for cattle should be healthy and free of pollutants. On December 10, 2019, the FSSAI published a guideline that states that commercial feeds/cattle feeds can only be manufactured, imported, or sold if the manufacturer bears the ISI Mark License. This step was made to ensure an increase in milk and meat products as well as consumer health safety.

IS 2052:2009 specifies the requirements for commercial cattle feeds. So, in order to make, import, or sell in the Indian market, the BIS Certification for compounded cattle feeds is required.

Initially, the FSSAI gave producers six months to meet the standard; however, as various stakeholders expressed concerns about implementation, the FSSAI extended the deadline to January 21, 2021. Following this, the covid- 19 outbreak prompted a lockdown, prompting the FSSAI to postpone adoption until July 1, 2021. The covid-19 second wave led to a further postponement of the deadline until January 1, 2022.

Cattle Feed Compounding Tests

Various tests are carried out to determine whether or not the product meets the specified standard.

  • Tests on Ingredients

  • Ingredients' chemical makeup is tested.

  • Calculation of vitamin D3

  • Calculation of vitamin E

  • Estimation of Aflatoxin B1

Benefits of BIS Certification for Cattle Feeds

  • BIS Certification guarantees that the product meets the required BIS standard and is of the highest quality.

  • BIS Certification ensures that manufacturing, importing, and selling procedures are not disrupted.

  • BIS Certification ensures that your product's brand is recognized in the marketplace.

  • Consumers place their trust in products with the standard ISI Mark.

Process of BIS Certification for Cattle Feed

  • Filling out the application form and attaching the relevant documentation.

  • BIS assigns an auditor to inspect the manufacturing unit, testing capabilities, quality control, and the manufacturing process, among other things.

  • During the audit, a sample of the product is taken from the manufacturing unit and sent to a BIS-approved laboratory for testing.

  • BIS begins the certification process once the laboratory reports reach the BIS authorities and confirm that the products are being manufactured in accordance with the quality criteria.

It should be highlighted that BIS Certification is required for both domestic and international firms that want to sell their products in India. To obtain BIS certification for their products, foreign manufacturers might employ an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR).

Conclusion

As a result, it should be evident that BIS Certification is required to make and distribute commercial compounded cow feeds. If a manufacturer fails to secure a BIS license and continues to make and sell products without the required ISI Mark, it will be regarded as a criminal crime, punishable by jail and a large fine.
