by Aleph India BIS Registration Consultant

Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) is a regulatory body responsible for maintaining the Quality Standards of the products being sold in the Indian Market. BIS notifies standard amendments for various products that require necessary quality standards in their manufacturing process to ensure the best quality and consumer safety. To ensure the best quality products to be sold in the market BIS provides licenses to the manufacturers after successful completion of sample tests and surveillance of their manufacturing unit conditions. There are various products that are kept in the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS). BIS provides the ISI Mark logo to be labeled on the products after completion of the certification process. Bureau of Indian Standards released the Quality Standard guidelines for BIS Certification for Toys.

BIS Certification for Toys

As per Toys (Quality Control) Order 2020, BIS Certification is mandatory to manufacture or import toys in the Indian market. BIS grants licenses to these toy manufacturers as per Schemes I and Schedule II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. For granting the license BIS has categorized the toys into two major categories, i.e, Electric Toys & Non-Electric Toys.

  • Electric Toys: Toys that consists of Electrical components are kept in the Electric Toys category and are certified under IS 15644:2006

  • Non-Electric Toys: Simple toys without any electrical components are kept in the Non-Electric Toys category and are certified under IS 9873 (Part 1):2019.

This is to be noted that the Foreign Manufacturers that are manufacturing toys and want to sell their products in the Indian market also require the necessary BIS license. These manufacturers are kept under Foreign Manufacturer Certification (FMCS) and require ISI Mark on their products to be sold in India.
