BIS Hallmarking for Gold and Silver by Aleph INDIA

by Aleph India BIS Registration Consultant

The method of hallmarking is used to determine the purity of precious metal artifacts and objects such as gold and silver jewellery. This is done to safeguard consumers from adulteration and to make jewellers and artifact producers accountable for maintaining metal purity. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national regulatory authority in charge of upholding quality standards and issuing licences to manufacturers following a thorough examination of their products. BIS has certified numerous Assaying and Hallmarking Centers (AHCs) across the country to make BIS Hallmarking easier for jewellers and artefact producers. These jewellers can have their jewellery hallmarked at any of the assaying and hallmarking centers. There are currently 945 AHCs in India that are being monitored by the BIS. These jewellers receive the hallmark stamp after successfully completing the hallmarking process, which they can use to designate their jewellery for client satisfaction with its purity.

The hallmarking of gold in India is divided into three purity grades: 22 carats, 18 carats, and 14 carats. The purity grade of the jewellery determines its price. On June 14, 2018, the government announced that hallmarking will be divided into two categories: gold artifacts and gold jewellery, and silver artifacts and silver jewellery. Jewellers having an annual turnover of 40 lakh Rs or more, on the other hand, are subject to the mandatory hallmarking scheme. After a delay owing to the government shutdown, the deadline for mandatory hallmarking was pushed back to June 1, 2021.

Parts of BIS Hallmarking

There were five marks used in the traditional system of hallmarking to denote the purity or suitability of the object. These five marks were: 1. ISI Mark (Standard) 2. Purity Level 3. The Mark of the Hallmarking Center 4. Marking Year and 5. The Mark of the Jeweller

There are three marks on the articles in the new form of hallmarking. The BIS Standard Mark, Purity Mark, and a unique identification number are all stamped on the products in the new hallmarking procedure.

Process of Gold Hallmarking

During the gold hallmarking procedure, a random sample is selected from the jewellers' samples. The hallmarking facility tests the sample's outside surface first, then conducts an assay test to determine the purity and fitness value of the products. After the testing is completed and the sample reports meet the specified quality requirements, the products are hallmarked using laser, press, or manual marking in the last phase.

BIS has greatly extended the number of Assaying and Hallmarking Centers in recent years in order to assist jewellers with the needed hallmarks. In order to promote the hallmarking procedure, the BIS has also cut the licencing charge in rural India.

Conclusion

It is now apparent that if you are a gold or silver jewellery producer, you will need a hallmark certificate in order to sell your product in India. Manufacturing and selling jewellery without a hallmark will be a criminal violation punishable by jail, a large fine, and the loss of a licence.
