Over the years whilst marketing online, a question I have heard so many times is; What is SPAM ? In some cases, even being accused of SPAMMING or being SPAM-ISH, I am so left to wonder myself...

Is it just a trendy word people like to throw about ?

OR is SPAM in the eye of the beholder ?

For example:

Is it SPAM if I send an email to a friend promoting a product or service, making it clear that I am indeed promoting something ?

Or, is it less so, if I disguise my message as if speaking generally, but throwing in the odd link ?

And how about Twitter, Facebook and the other Social Media sites, that will allow me to pay for advertising to everyone and anyone, but not allow me to freely post items to my feed - is that SPAM ?

So, to ask the question again -

What is your definition of SPAM ?
