As the others have said if done right it can be helpful...in my mind it depends what niche it is in and if you have the time to do it...if you are sacrificing for quality content on your site then I wouldn't bother as much....you do need links no matter what but when I'm serious about a money site then I would rather put as much quality info on the site as possible.
