Why is QuickBooks scan manager not working and how to fix this?

QuickBooks Scan Manager allows you to conveniently attach files to your invoices, sales, receipt, bills and other important transactions. How to install QuickBooks Scan Manager?

In case you set up the latest scanner or if you are scanning documents as a beginner, you might feel the need to install the QuickBooks Scan manager for QuickBooks Attached documents.

Important: You have to use a TWAIN-compliant scanner with QuickBooks Scan Manager.

Solution 1: Build your Scan Profile

Step 1: From the QuickBooks icon bar, choose Docs to open the Doc Center.
Step 2: Select Scan a Document.
Step 3: Choose the correct Scan Profile or tap New to set up a new profile.
Step 4: Edit the name of your profile, then click on Continue.
Step 5: Adjust the profile settings as appropriate then press Save.

Note: You cannot alter the default destination folder. Your scanned documents will always save to the same folder where your company file (.QBW) is saved.

Solution 2: Install and examine your scanner

Step 1: Highlight your profile, then choose Select.
Step 2: In the Select Scanner window, press Scanner Setup Wizard.
Note: The present Selection field should list your scanner. If you do not view your scanner listed, choose the Yes radio button then press Next to download the recent scanner database from Nuance.

Step 3: Click the proper mode. (Typically, this will be Normal Mode.)
Step 4: Test the Perform Tests box, then choose Next.
Step 5: Click on the tests you want to run, then choose Next twice to start testing your Scanner.
Step 6: You should see the test page that you scanned in place of “Your scanner document here.” Check the Repeat this test in order to check all modes box, then tap Next to continue testing in other available modes.

QuickBooks Scan Manager not working

If you face problems while installing scan manager or scanning documents or in case you view these error messages: 

Could not scan. TWAIN driver not found.

Here is what you can do then:

  1. Make sure you are using a TWAIN-compliant scanner.
  2. Examine your scanner to ensure its functioning correctly.

Check whether you can use it normally outside of QuickBooks. In case not, the issue may be with the scanner itself. Reach out to the scanner manufacturer or contact an IT professional to resolve this.

Error 281, 1

In case you get an error called Error 281, 1 when trying to scan with Scan Manager, do the following to resolve it:

Step 1: Format your Scan profile and make a new one.
Step 2: Alter User Account Settings in Windows.
Step 3: Fix QuickBooks and try scanning again.
Step 4: Reinstall using a clean install, and set up QuickBooks Scan Manager, and try again.
