Summary Notes of Article:

  • The question of who is responsible for security in the cloud is always confusing. Ponemon Institute conducted a survey of 990 senior IT professionals in the UK and US, and found the following results:

    - 56% of participants adopt the cloud for cost-reduction purposes.
    - 8% of participants said it was to improve security.
    - 79% of respondents admitted that security is one of the main concerns to migrate to the cloud.

  • Jeff Schilling, CSO of Armor, thinks it’s surprising that it seems to be obvious that security is an important source of concern in the cloud, however many users aren’t willing to pay a premium to ensure their sensitive information in the cloud.

  • Schilling thinks that security in the cloud is achievable, but with the right technology, the right management techniques and the right staff.

  • One of the questions in the survey addressed the issue of security responsibility in the cloud (SaaS or IaaS). 15% of participants said IT security is most responsible for ensuring the security of SaaS apps, and 16% IaaS resources.

  • According to Schilling, we mustn’t forget security is everyone’s responsibility and suggests customers thinking about hiring managed services to clearly distribute responsibilities between them and the provider.

  • The survey also revealed that 59% of respondents deploy IT security technologies on-premises, and only 39% in the cloud.

  • Intrusion-prevention systems (IPS) are deployed in the cloud by 54% of participants, while 42% do it on-premises.

  • Finally, the study also revealed that 32% of respondents feel that IT security apps need to be processed on premises.
