What is cedar siding?

by Ivan Q. programmer

Cedar siding is a type of outdoor home siding that provides a rustic look because it is made from small cedar pieces attached to a pebble-shaped outdoor wall. While this type of siding creates the desired look, the installation process is generally more labor intensive than other types of outdoor commercial siding. The cedar cocktail usually has a wedge-shaped wood appearance, and when used for siding, it is installed in long vertical rows, providing a dramatic, rich look.

Typically, the outside of the cedar siding is split and not split. Some cedar siding manufacturers offer both types, but splitting is generally considered more traditional. In addition, by dividing the tremors, grooves in the wood are accentuated, which usually improves the appearance of the shingle. However, when the shake separates, the surface becomes much rougher than the saw shake. Whether visiting a local home improvement store or working with a qualified contractor, consumers can choose from a variety of colors and styles.

There are some advantages that siding  has over other types of wood exterior siding. Cedar siding generally resists warping better than other types of siding, and is less prone to cup or split than other woods. In addition, cedar siding is easier to work with, which sometimes leads to lower quotes for contractors as most have the ease of handling cedar. Plus, with the right flavor, cedar siding shrinks less than most other types of wood.

Often, cedar siding provides exceptional insect protection because of the cedar oil, which repels many insects. The part of cedar with the highest concentration of cedar oil is the core, which is the part of cedar most desirable for outdoor use. Cedar wood oil also provides excellent protection against wood decay. Cedar wood is also desirable for spa use because spas and saunas are exposed to high levels of humidity.

Cedar siding is usually great for the exterior of a home, however, a significant amount of preparatory work may be required before starting installation cedar siding. Many times, because the preparation process can be time consuming and involved, installing cedar siding can be unacceptable for a homeowner who wants to install it himself. Also, before installing cedar siding, other home renovations may be required before starting the process.
