What is arthroscopic knee surgery?
A surgical process used by orthopaedic surgeons to make a visual diagnosis of the patient's affected joint area, and treat it accordingly is called arthroscopy . When it comes to arthroscopic knee surgery, the process involves the use of a tiny camera to get an insider's view of the knee area of the patient. In this surgerical procedure a small incision is made in the knee area of the patient through which a tiny camera also known as an arthoscope is placed in the body. This camera helps the surgeons to investigate the problems in the knee area.
Arthroscopic knee surgery is best solution for patients who suffer from misaligned patella, torn meniscus, or need a repair in the joint ligaments. This surgery is especially suggested to in case of:
Patella/ kneecap which is out of position
Torn cartilage pieces which are loose in the joint
Swollen synovium (the lining in the joint)Fractures in the knee bones
Torn meniscus ie. the cartilage between the bones in the knee
Removal of Baker's Cyst
Arthroscopic Knee Surgery Process
The procedure begins with the injection of anesthesia. Anesthesia can be either local, regional or general in nature. Post anesthesia tiny incisions are made in the knee area of the patient. This is followed by expanding the knee with the addition of saline through the incision. Once the knee expands, it is easier for the surgeon to diagnose the joint internally. On diagnosis of the problem, the surgeon inserts tiny tools through the incision and rectify the problem. As the surgery gets completed, the saline injected in the knee area is drained away and the incision is closed with the help of stitches.
Some of the very common things to happen during and after the surgery are chances of excessive bleeding, damage to the ligaments, risk of blood clot formation and stiffness of the knee.
Recovery Period
As this is a minimally invasive procedure (MIP), the recovery period is quick. In most cases the patient is discharged the same day. As already mentioned the patient can develop swelling, which can be treated using ice-packs. Along with this the doctor also recommends couple of physical exercises and other instructions to the patient.
