The process through which an impaired kidney is replaced by a healthy one through a surgical process is called Kidney transplantation. This surgery is usually done when the kidney fails to perform properly and reaches almost at an end-stage. Those who suffer from this medical condition have to either go for dialysis ( to get the waste removed from blood) or opt for kidney transplant. The new kidneys can be sourced from either a live donor or a deceased donor.

Once the transplantation is done the patient and his family needs to follow certain set of precautions for quicker recovery of the patient. Of course, things do not remain the same and these small changes are sure to change the pattern of life of the patient. Usually within a month or two after the kidney transplant surgery most patients recover and can go back to their normal routine. Though in the initial days regular follow-ups are more often, as time passes the frequency of follow-ups comes down. This is done to monitor the functioning of the new kidney.

It is recommended that the patient moves on with his daily schedule, within few weeks of being discharged from the hospital. However nothing should be done in excess in order to avoid straining the functioning of the kidneys. There are many patients who feel that their energy level has come down after the surgery. This is quite normal and with proper diet you can regain your strength and stamina. One should always keep in mind that the body takes time to adjust to the new medications, and with time the body will function better. It is for this reason that doctors recommend on going slow with the your activities so that there is no strain on recovery.

One thing which becomes a vital part of your daily schedule post-surgery is exercise. Regular exercise needs to be done to release tension, boost your stamina and energy levels. Exercise will also help you get back to your routine activities quickly and also improves the overall health of your body. Once you are back home after the surgery it is recommended that you start with light walks. 15-20 minutes of light walking is enough in the initial days. Then gradually move on to longer periods of walks and streneous exercise regime. Lifting of weights etc needs to be done only after your doctor allows you to do the same.

Another area which needs to be given good amount of attention is that of the kind of diet you follow. No doubt that a balanced diet needs to be taken, but at the same time care needs to be taken that the food rich in vitamin D and calcium is a regular part of your diet. This is all the more important because after kidney transplantation the medications given to the patient tend to weaken the bones.

These are some of the crucial things which every person who has undergone kidney transplant must follow.
