Bariatric Surgery – Post Operative Care
Life after weight loss surgery is never the same. Therefore it is always advised that you understand the whole process of bariatric surgery before undergoing it. Here we bring you the list of things which needs to be done after the surgery is done:
Pain management after the surgery
One of the best method of pain management for those who have undergone gastric bypass surgery is patient controlled analgesia (PCA). As PCA allows the patient to receive medications in small doses, it helps in receiving steady pain relief. This way pain is controlled in a great manner by PCA. Other medications like Morphine, Demerol. Toradol and Tylenol is also administered to control and bring down the pain of the patient.
Activity and circualtion post-surgery
Many of you might not know this, but activity is a very critical part of the recovery and weight loss process. Activity helps in the prevention of blood clots, constipation, pneumonia as well as speeds up the weight loss process. This is precisely why the exercise regime of the patient begins right in the hospital itself.
Likewise fo circulation of the blood compression hose are wrapped around the feet of the patient. The hose is actually plastic sleeves which not only help in better blood circualtion in the legs and feet but also prevents the formation of blood clots. Usually patients have to wear the compression hose for the intial 2-3 days while he is still in the bed.
Breathing exercise after weight loss surgery
This is another thing which the patient has to undergo after the surgery. Normally he has to take ten deep breaths into the spirometer every hour. Doing this helps prevent collapse of the lungs, pneumonia as well as other problems related to breathing. In case the patient is suffering from asthma, then he has to carry his asthma inhalers to the hospital. Those suffering from sleep apnea need to remain on breathing monitors and monitored until their breathing is normal on its own.
Food/ Nutrition
Your eating habits with change drastically after the weight loss surgery. The quantity of the food which the patient used to eat in the past, would now seem to be too much for him. Also now he has to eat small meals – slowly and also chew it properly. Food rich in protein has to be taken and having liquid in between the meal needs to be avoided.
These are some of the major things which needs to be taken care of once you have undergone weight loss surgery.
