Liver Cancer Symptoms and Treatment
Like any other cancer, the early signs of liver cancer too are difficult to trace. But in case you suffer from some of the symptoms listed below, then it is recommended that you consult a specialist at the earliest:
1. Loss of appetite
2. Loss of weight without even trying
3. Weakness, fatigue with regular vomitting and nausea
4. Constant pain and swelling in the abdominal part, especially in the upper abdomen
5. Chalky, white stools
6. Skin and the whites of the eyes turns yellow in color (also a sign of jaundice)
Though the causes of liver cancer is unknown, in most cases people develop liver cancer due to prolonged liver disease called cirrhosis. Cirrhosis in turn is caused by alcohol abuse, hepatitis B and C. There are certain cases wherein the cancer also develops due to chronic infection with certain hepatitis virus. Recent studies show that long term exposure to triclosan, a common ingredient in soaps/ detergents caused liver cancer in mice. Even though triclosan has not been proven to have caused liver cancer in humans, it does have negative impact on human health.
Liver cancer treatment procedure usually depends on the extent to which the cancer has spread in the body and the health of liver in general. Surgery, liver transplant, embolization, ablation therapy, radiation as well as chemotherapy are some of the treatment methods. During surgery small sizes of tumors are removed, while in liver transplantation the cancerous liver is replaced by a healthy one.
Another method of treating liver cancer is by starving the cancer of blood supply thereby preventing its growth. This method is called embolization, and is usually done in cases wherein the extent of cancer is too large for palliation. Ablation therapy on the other hand involves killing of the cancer cells using heat, laser or injecting a special kind of acid or alcohol directly on the cancer cells. Thus this is one treatment which involves no surgery.
Usually liver cancer is diagonised with the help of blood and urine tests, imaging tests like ultrasound, CT scan and MRI. In certain cases biopsy is also recommended to understand the development of this kind of cancer. Based on the test reports, the cancer can be staged and further treatment can be recommended by the doctor.
