What is a Blood Culture Test?

by Medical Tourism Medical Tourism

A blood culture test is a type of blood test that detects systemic infarction of the body. This is an infraction that affects the whole body and not any part. In the lab, fungi called bacteria and yeast are examined by blood samples.

If any of these fungus is found in the test, then it is a symptom of blood infection. This condition is called a bacterium. You can easily say that a positive blood culture means bacteria in the blood. This infection spreads throughout the body through blood. These bacteria start from the skin, lungs, urine, air and gastrointestinal tract. These are common sources of blood transfusion.

Why do blood culture tests?

Doctors recommend blood cultures when they are likely to develop a blood infection in the patient. It is very important to have a test for blood infection as it can also take a fatal form. One such problem with blood infection is sepsis. On reporting this test, doctors will be able to know which organism or bacteria is causing the blood transfusion and what is its best treatment.

If you have symptoms of systemic infection, then you may need this test. These include:

  • Chills
  • fever
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Rapid breathing or heart rate changes
  • Heart rate increases
  • Headache
  • Muscle pen
  • Decreased urination
  • Trouble breathing

Blood culture and susceptibility tests prove to be fully effective in confirming and diagnosing infections such as pneumonia.

If a blood infection is not treated in time, this fatal disease can take the form of sepsis. Due to this, there is a risk of damage to any part of the body. The following symptoms of sepsis are:

  • Confusion
  • Decreased urine
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Mottled skin

Do I need another test besides this blood culture test?

  • If the doctor feels that you have pneumonia, then to confirm it, he can give instructions to get your mucus tested. This test is known as the Village Stain Test and it detects why you have an infection.
  • You may also have a sensitivity or sensitivity test that shows which antibiotic may be given to eliminate your infection.
  • There may also be a Complete Blood Count (CBC) test before or alongside your blood culture test, which indicates a high level of white blood cells. High levels of white blood cells may indicate infection.
  • To further confirm this, your doctor can also give instructions for the urine test.

Even after the results of the blood culture test are negative, if there are signs of infection in you, then after some time after taking antibiotics, you should have a blood culture test again, to confirm that the infection is completely finished. It is done.

Things to know

Is there any danger of getting a blood culture test?

There is a slight risk of injections used in the test, such as bleeding, infarction, and mild injury. When the needle is injected into any part of your hand, a mild sting or pain may be felt.

What type of preparation should I do before conducting a blood culture test?

You do not need any special preparation before the test.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking, such as antibiotics, herbal, vitamins, and supplements.

Also, inform the doctor about the medicines you are taking without a prescription.

It is very important that the doctor is aware of all your medicines and their dosage before the test.

What can affect my test results?

Antibiotics can slow down the growth of infected bacteria. Consumption of antibiotics just before the test can affect your test results. Talk to your doctor for more information.

How is the blood culture test done?

Usually, the doctor will collect two blood samples by injecting your arm into different veins. Taking two blood samples is more likely to yield accurate results. In the next course of action, the blood sample will be sent to the lab for examination.

What happens after a blood culture test?

Blood samples are placed in the lab with a substance called culture that promotes the growth of bacteria or yeast.

Initial trends may be available in 24 hours, but it can take from 48 to 72 hours to detect the bacteria or yeast responsible for your infarction.

Understand the result

What does my blood culture test result mean?

A positive result means that bacteria or yeast are present in your blood. A negative result means that no signs of any bacteria or yeast have been detected in the blood.

Test results can also vary depending on your age, sex, health history, the method used during the test, and other things.
