by Meenakshi R. Consultant

It’s been almost nine months that you are carrying your baby in your womb and finally it’s time for the baby to see the outside world. You should be aware of the symptoms that you may have which make you understand that it’s almost time for your baby to take birth. This condition is called labor when the baby is born out of the womb of the mother.

Following are the symptoms of labor and delivery which will give you a closer look at how can you understand that your baby is about to be born-

Baby Dropping

For those women who are going to be first-time moms, you will see the signs of labor approaching almost one month prior to the actual due date. You can feel your baby going lower in your pelvic floor. This condition is known as baby dropping or baby lightening. The baby dropping may not be felt significantly in the subsequent birth of babies. You can feel the baby taking position getting lower than your lungs in a head down state, in order to make it easier to be pushed out. This also makes it easier for you to breathe as the baby goes farther away from your lungs, giving you more space to inhale and exhale.

Increased Cramps

You may feel that your cramps are increasing. It can be the same for groin and back pain as well. This is because the muscles and joints in your body are getting prepared for the delivery of the baby.

Diarrhoea

You may often feel pain in your pelvis and increased bowel movements. In the days before labor, the muscles of your rectum also get prepared for birth. And thus you have diarrhoea which is completely normal during this stage.

Mucus Plug

You can have this breakage of mucus plug from anytime between a couple of weeks prior to delivery to even a couple of hours before. It is not actually a plug but you can feel a thick mucus discharge from the cervical canal and vagina. It may be accompanied by some contractions and cramping and the urge to urinate.

Burst of Energy

The symptom is often known as nesting when you have excess energy and you feel like making preparations for the arrival of your baby. On the contrary, at times, you may also feel more tired than ever and take longer naps due to fatigue. There can be moments of either of these- fatigue or excessive energy. It is common as the days of labor and delivery come nearer. The nesting symptom gets to be seen in pregnant women.

Water Breaking

Breaking of water is one of the most prominent and significant symptoms of labor and delivery. You get to know that the labor has begun. It may be a dripping of liquid or a trickle of water like substance which is actually amniotic fluid which is colorless and odorless. You should contact someone immediately and seek medical help as it is an indication that your baby is soon to be born.
