What Are the Proper Steps to Exfoliate Your Face?

by Dermalogica India Dermalogica Beauty

We all love to have radiant-looking skin at all times but is it possible with the dead skin cells blocking your skin? Usually, our skin naturally sheds dead skin every 28 to 30 days, but it may not happen at times and lead to the deposition of dead skin on the skin. This will result in clogging of pores, acne breakouts, blackheads, and whiteheads. Hence, it is crucial to include exfoliation in your skincare routine.

Exfoliation helps in removing the dead skins and provides healthy skin. Ideally, you must exfoliate your face once or twice every week to maintain your skin in a good condition. However, it is important to choose the right exfoliants according to your skin type.

There are two different methods of exfoliation - Physical and Chemical. Although both are effective, you should choose the method depending on your skin type. Those with sensitive or dry skin should avoid physical exfoliation because it can cause irritation or redness on the skin. Similarly, you need to carefully select the chemical exfoliant that is suitable for your skin type.

Here are a few things to know how both physical and chemical exfoliation is carried out:

Steps to Exfoliate Your Face:

Physical Exfoliation

Physical exfoliation involves using an exfoliating scrub, exfoliating gloves, or brush and sponge. As the name suggests, it is the method of exfoliating your skin using fingers or certain tools to perform exfoliation.

Step-by-Step Guide to Physical Exfoliation:

Step 1: Cleanse your face with face wash using lukewarm water

Step 2: Apply the exfoliating scrub or facial scrub on your face

Step 3: Start rubbing your face gently in circular motions using your fingertips, exfoliating brush, or gloves.

Step 4: Rinse your face again with lukewarm water

Note:

  • Don’t exfoliate if you have any injuries, wounds, or open cuts on your face or skin.

  • Don’t use hot water to cleanse or exfoliate your face. Always use lukewarm water while washing your face.

Chemical Exfoliation

Chemical exfoliants consist of AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids) and some fruit enzymes. Usually, chemical exfoliation doesn’t require any tool or physical effort. Chemical exfoliants will dissolve the dead skin cells without any need for physical pressure.

Step-by-Step Guide to Chemical Exfoliation:

Step 1: First cleanse your face using a good cleanser or a face wash.

Step 2: Apply a few drops of chemical exfoliant and dab it on your face.

Step 3: Wait for two minutes for the exfoliant to dry

Step 4: Immediately apply a moisturizer or serum to your face

Why Exfoliation is Important?

Dead skin cells which deposit on the skin make your skin dull, flaky, and dry. It may also cause acne breakouts, blackheads, and other skin concerns due to clogged pores. So, it is crucial to remove dead skin cells on time. You can only do this through exfoliation and can keep your skin healthy. Most people don’t understand the importance of exfoliation but it is the best way to get glowing and younger-looking skin.

Conclusion

You must take care of your skin to prevent skin issues and also signs of aging. Exfoliation is one of the crucial ways to improve your skin’s texture and health. Choose the exfoliant which is suitable for your skin type and include it in your skincare regime to get a bright and youthful appearance.
