What are the Advantages of Chemical Exfoliation?

by Dermalogica India Dermalogica Beauty

What is the definition of a chemical exfoliant? Chemical exfoliants can help to remove dead skin cells from the skin. They are available in a variety of combinations. Over-the-counter preparations are available, but stronger ones are usually applied by a skincare therapist as a chemical peel.

Chemical exfoliators are organic product acids that are used to dissolve dead skin cells. They may contain oil-soluble product acids (such as salicylic acid), which help to break down the stubborn oil in the pores.

How do chemical exfoliants work?

Normalizing cell turnover refers to how quickly epidermal cells die and migrate to the stratum corneum, displacing older cells. Exfoliants accomplish this by cleaning beneath the dead layer of living cells and teaching them to modify their behaviour — in more technical language. They keep an eye on receptors to see if they can process cell division.

What are the benefits of chemical exfoliation?

Smoother skin, hydrated skin cells, stimulated cell regeneration, unclogging pores and congestion, facilitated lymphatic drainage for internal cleansing, increased absorption of daily serums and moisturisers, and rousing of oxygen-rich blood to nourish the skin's surface are just a few of the benefits of chemically exfoliating your skin.

Physical and chemical exfoliants both have their advantages, but chemical exfoliants provide the complete package! They not only reveal a more radiant, smoother, and refined skin, but they also improve the skin's overall appearance and feel with just one treatment.

Advantages of chemical exfoliation:

  • Improving the tone, clarity, and surface of the skin.

  • Stimulating the growth of healthy skin cells and new collagen, resulting in a radiant complexion.

  • Reducing the appearance of marks happened because of sun exposure.

  • Assisting in the healing of breakouts.

  • Smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines.

  • Increasing the skin's hydration.

Here are some more do’s and don’ts of exfoliation:

Do’s:

  • Exfoliate your skin once it has been thoroughly cleansed.

  • Gently massage the exfoliant into your skin in a circular motion.

  • Exfoliate at night, if possible, to avoid sun exposure on a newly exfoliated layer of skin. Don't forget to use SPF if you exfoliate during the day!

  • After exfoliating, use a toning mist and moisturise right afterwards.

  • To protect your skin from the sun, apply sunscreen every day.

  • Follow the instructions thoroughly.

Don’ts:

  • Don't exfoliate too much.

  • Do not vigorously rub the exfoliant into your skin.

  • Wait at least 72 hours before exfoliating after bleaching, waxing, or threading.

  • Wait 72 hours before exfoliating after a facial treatment.

  • Do not exfoliate if your skin is irritated, sensitive, or sunburned. Allow the skin to heal before resuming exfoliation.

  • Wait until the skin has recovered before exfoliating following peels, microdermabrasion, laser, or other resurfacing procedures.

  • If you're utilising medically prescribed exfoliating creams, gels, or other products, don't exfoliate.

  • Exfoliation should not be combined with the use of retinol or retinoids.
