What Are The Duties And Traditions Of The Grand Master In Grand Lodges?

by Online Masonic Regalia Online Masonic Regalia

In the grand lodges of Freemasonry, the grand rank is held by Grand Master. The Grand Master may control over his Grand Lodge and also possess certain rights and powers in every lodge under his authority. Grand Masters are generally addressed with the words “Most worshipful” and in Pennsylvania; they are addressed as “Right Worshipful”. And under the Grand Lodge of Scotland, they are titled as “Grand Master Mason”.

Let’s Take A Glimpse Into The Duties Of The Office

Similarly to the Worshipful Master of a lodge who every year appoints lodge officers to get assistance from them, Grand Master of each Grand Lodge yearly appoints Grand Lodge officers so that they can assist him in his tasks. Grand Lodges also appoint Deputy Grand Masters (oftentimes also called as District Deputy Grand Masters) who can work on behalf of the Grand Master when he cannot do so.

However, in the United Grand Lodge of England, if the Grand Master has the blood of Royal Family, he can elect a ‘Pro Grand Master’ for becoming “his principal adviser and to serve on the behalf of him on those events when he cannot be present due to royal engagements”. The Pro Grand Master is different from the Deputy Grand Master.

Traditions

In association with the office of Grand Master, there are two different traditions. Usually speaking, the European practice is for the same Grand Master who is re-elected for a number of consecutive years, maybe even more than a few decades, while in other countries a Grand Master serves a fixed period of one to three years, and after that, they retire.

In some European countries, the position of Grand Master is filled by the members who belong to the royal families. In several countries of Protestant northern European, the position is held by the King for a long duration. In Wales and England, the present-day Grand Master is HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Kent who was appointed in 1967 and has been re-appointed every year from that time.
