Freemasonry, the systems and institution of Freemasons, is the oldest Fraternal organization in the world. Surrounded by various myths and theories, Freemasonry originated during the Middle Ages in Europe and continues even now in the modern world! Considered an oath-bound society where Freemasons are devoted to moral discipline, fellowship, and mutual assistance, Freemasonry is rich in rituals, activities, and customs that may remain hidden from the public eye for years to come. It started in the Middle Ages with the guilds of skilled builders and expanded with time around the world, especially with the advancements made by the British Empire.

Since its origin, Freemasonry faced a decline with the decreased requirement of cathedral buildings. It was then that Freemasons started accepting honorary members in order to prevent dwindling membership. At the present, the membership is stable once again and Freemasonry prospers around the world.

Masonic Lodges

A lodge is a term used in Freemasonry for a basic organizational unit. The same term is also used to refer to the building used by Freemasons to organize lodge meetings. As Freemasonry spread worldwide, different places may have experienced a change in the common practices of Freemasonry. Yet, most lodges in a large number of countries have Freemasons divided by three major degrees. Entered apprentice, fellow of the craft, and master mason are the most prominent degrees in Masonic lodges. Some lodges may also have more than three degrees that separate the Freemasons into different divisions.

Freemasons organise lodge meetings at Masonic lodges for various reasons such as giving lectures, granting a degree to a Freemason, or performing a ceremony. On such occasions, Freemasons wear a conventional uniform that may include several regalia rich with symbols associated with Freemasonry. These symbols are also prevalent in their clothing accessories such as cotton Masonic gloves, Masonic ties, cufflinks, and more.

Masonic Gloves: Why do Freemasons Wear Them?

Cotton Masonic gloves are an interesting inclusion in the conventional Masonic uniform and have been a topic of discussion for many. One of the reasons explaining the use of gloves has to do with the virtue of equality within Freemasonry. Long ago, during lodge meetings, men with different jobs and social standings would meet and shake hands. So if a clerk would shake hands with a tradesman, the roughness of their hands would tell each other about the nature of their work and their social standings. This would not promote equality among the Freemasons. Wearing cotton Masonic gloves enabled all Freemasons to meet as equals without assuming the social status of each other.
