by Physios NearMe Physiotherapy

If you are into sports, you are already aware of what sports injuries or sports broken bones are and how it can render such excruciating pain. Sports injuries can occur due to overtraining, lack of conditioning and improper techniques. It is vital that you warm up before taking to your concerned sport; otherwise, it may augment the risk of injury.

Most usual types of sports injuries are sprains, muscle spasms, dislocations, fractures, neck injury, back injury, gold elbow, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, Achilles tendinitis, runner’s knee, and rotator cuff injuries. Physical activity is necessary to maintain an overall proper health condition. However, one must take the precautions to minimize the level of risks. Using the correct equipment and wearing recommended protective gear can help in preventing an injury. Start with slow activity at first and gradually increase your level of strength and endurance. Listen to your body to understand the first signs of pain, stress or discomfort. A broken bone or a break that goes through part or all of the bone is called a fracture. Common causes of fracture in teens include falls, accidents, and sports mishaps.

What Are the Kinds of Broken Bones?

Sports broken bones or fracture generally happen in the following types:

 • Avulsion fracture: A tendon or ligament or muscle pulls off the bone, fracturing it

 • Growth plate fracture: A break at a growing bone

 • Stress fracture: Small crack in the bone

 • Comminuted fracture: A bone fractures into more than two pieces

 • Compression fracture: A collapsing of the bone

 • Spiral fracture - A fracture minimum one part of the bone has been twisted.

 • Transverse fracture - A straight break across a bone.

 • Hairline fracture - A partial fracture of the bone which becomes hard to detect with even x-rays.

 • Impacted fracture – As the bone fractures, one piece or fragment of the bone goes into another.

 • Longitudinal fracture - The break is along the length of the bone in a straight line.

 • Oblique fracture – A diagonal fracture

How Are Broken Bones Treated?

Broken bones are generally treated with a cast, splint, or brace. This stops the broken bone from moving while it heals. Sometimes the dislocated bone is put back in place before the cast, splint, or brace is put on. This is done through a procedure called a reduction, also called "setting the bone." It can be of two kinds; a closed reduction where a surgeon moves the bones back into the proper position and an open reduction where the surgeon makes a cut and moves the bones into place.

How Can You Feel Better?

As you recover from sports broken bone, continue to have a healthy diet which includes plenty of calcium and vitamin D.  Follow the health care provider's directions for rest or doing mild exercises and take immense care of the cast or splint. Broken bones are common injuries and with the proper treatment it will heal well soon and you can start doing the regular activities required for daily lives.
