Image First, imagine going to a salon after searching high and low for the perfect style and new look for you!  You will probably be ecstatic to see how well this new style will look on you.

Imagine being so enthralled with the process that you put your total trust into your service provider, only to leave disappointed, upset, and devastated at the results.

No one wants to feel this way, because it will take 6 months to a year to grow your hair out again and start all over. It is best to avoid this all together in order to have what you truly want. Having a proper curl consultation is the way to go to best prevent mishaps like this.  Here are some curly hair tips for you to follow to best prepare for a successful consultation:

1. Have a vision

The best way to begin is by thinking about what you desire for yourself.  Close your eyes and imagine how the hair will look and feel.  During this process, get really creative and be honest with yourself about how you want your hair to look.  Think short term and long term as one move will impact the next move.

2. Bring a photo

Visit online sites or purchase magazines to "window shop" for hair-dos.  When you come across something that you really like, take a snapshot of it to bring with you during your consultation.  Be sure to look for multiple angles and be prepared to communicate why you like that particular hair style or do.  Is it how the fringe frames the face, or how the hair falls on the model's shoulders?  Whatever it is, be prepared to point it out.

3. Know your intentions

Think about why you desire a change.  Is it for functionality, healthy hair, or to maintain your current look?  Know where your priorities lie so that you are not swayed by any other factors.  Knowing your intentions is a big part of driving your success in this process

4. Watch and listen

While you discuss these things with your curl stylist, tell her about the unique qualities of your hair. Watch her response and reactions to what you say.  Does she look comfortable working with your hair, or does she appear unsure? Browse her environment and look for naturally curly hair care products that might be suitable for your hair.  If you are unsure, ask her.  Finally listen to her. Hear her honest thoughts about your hair.  Listen with an open ear and give your stylist the chance to earn your business.  Then listen beyond words.  Read their level of passion for hair and their care or concern for their clients.

5. Make a call

After these 4 steps, you should have all of the data you need to make a wise decision on whether or not to book with this particular stylist. If you still feel major or lingering uncertainty, you may want to get another opinion from another stylist before moving forward.

These steps require work, but they are well worth it for you.  Best wishes!
