Today naturally curly women straighten via chemicals for temporary blowouts.  Both heat styling or relaxed hairstyles are just that - relaxed.  The hair lies flat, it is pretty easy to style, and requires little maintenance.  But there is a price to pay.  Heat styling and chemical straighteners both break the hair down at its strongest level.  The most resilient bond within the hair strand is known as the disulfide bond.  Although it can only be altered from chemical treatments, prolonged or intense high heat styling and have the same permanent response.

If wearing your hair in a straight style is your preference, well no need to make a change.  However, if there is something inside of you that is attracted to volume, texture and more styling freedom, welcome to the “natural side.”  To get here takes take and patience, but when the wait it over, it will be worth it!

Transitioner Basics

1.    Set a goal for when to Big Chop
There are two types of transitioners, the kind that jump in with both feet and cross the bridge in one swoop and the kind that don’t.  The first naturalista is ready to take the natural hair journey and doesn’t want to waste ANY time.   She is ready to Big Chop at once.  While less than 40% of transitioners take this plunge, it is more common than you think!  If you are ready now, go for it and skip over to step 3.  If you want to take your time and fully utilize the term “transitioner” move on to step 2.

2.    Choose your style methods for the long haul
The journey could take you anywhere between 10 months to a year.  With the full year being the typical time period when most women are ready to cut the perm and move “go natural.”At this time you can expect to have roughly 5 inches of hair based on the particular style your hair gets cut in.  So on your way here, you will want to map out early on, what type of transitioning styles you want to wear.
Transitioner Styles

If your hair is medium or short, you will not have the luxury of wearing a ponytail every day.  Your BEST bet is to do twist and curl styles.  As your hair grows, you can twist the roots and curl the ends with rods and some curly hair products.  When fully dry, unravel with a dab of oil, shake and go!  Although the process can be completely overwhelming it can be really simple.  A style like this can easily be your go to style throughout the entire journey.  You can also do a long-term protective style like individual braids or twist, or even hair extensions.

Any long term protective style has the potential to be GREAT for your hair given it stays in for no more than 2 months, you feed your natural hair with good products for curly hair like  a moisturizer or leave in daily, and the hair is cleansed as needed throughout the full 2 months.

If you regularly abide by these things you will be natural in no time.  So, when you hair has grown to a nice, comfortable natural length, it’s time to BIG CHOP!
Congrats and enjoy your new ‘do!
