Retaining Hair length takes time, and a specific method that works with your unique hair type.  Once you find a method, follow it consistently for best results.

Growing long lengths is not as easy as it used to be.  Mostly due to the hair trends we use for caring and styling our hair.  With the fast paced lifestyle we live today, it can be difficult to conceptualize the time and effort it really takes to grow your hair especially when it is naturally curly.  When determining a method for you, it is best to consider all factors about your unique hair.  What is it’s density, or size? In other words, do you have thick hair, medium or fine (referring to its bulk).  Next, consider your hair length and haircut. Finally what is your curl pattern, coily, curly, or wavy?  These factors make all the difference in your regimen.

Hair Growth Plan

First and foremost, no matter what the hair type, keep your hair and scalp cleansed on a regular basis.  Then follow these suggestions.

OPTIMAL CONDITIONING

Condition your hair at least once a month and more often if your hair is damaged.  Based on your hair type there are a few things you need to know.   When growing your hair you want to make sure you are giving it the conditioning it needs.   Finer hair tends toneed strengthening and moisturizing while thicker hair tends to need even more moisturizing.  Therefore tailor your conditioning regiment as such.  For a balance of moisture and strength, use formulated curly hair products like CURLS Hair Ecstasy Hair Tea Deep Conditioner. Thicker hair should condition with CURLS Coconut Sublime Conditioner for butter-rich hydrated curls.

MOISTURIZING

The ends of the hair are the oldest parts of the hair and have suffered the most wear and tear.  Therefore the ends tend to break and chip, inhibiting hair growth.  To combat this breakage, moisturize your ends nightly with an organic hair care product like Cashmere Curls Moisturizer.  For Finer textured hair, you can seal the moisture in by applying a light oil to your tips.  Thicker, non-porous hair types can seal their ends on the last 2 inches of the hair only, as this hair type can have a difficult time receiving moisture.

TRIMMING THE ENDS

It sounds like an oxymoron, but trimming your ends will help your hair to grow, regardless of hair type.  By keeping your ends freshly cut, allows the hair to hold its moisture in the hair shaft.  It also keeps your hair strong from root to tip preventing breakage on the ends.  If you have not been trimming consistently, start by taking off 1-2 full inches off, and then trim ¼-1/2 inch every 2-3, months based on your needs.

STYLING

Keep your ends concealed as often as possible by wearing buns and other updos.  You could also add extensions to hide your ends as long as they are worn for no more than 2 months.  Tight styles and miniature braids should be avoided when trying to retain length. Finer hair or kinky coily hair types should also avoid styles that cause your hair to tangle.

So there you have it.  Follow these directions closely, grab a tape measure and track your progress.  As you grow, make changes needed.  Happy growing!
