Freemasonry is also the oldest organization across the globe having the longest history that any organization in the globe has. The first Grand Lodge of Freemasonry was formed in 1717 in London. Some of the symbols and terms used in this organization are more than centuries old and are used since it has been formed. Stone Masons were the founding fathers of this fraternity. After becoming a member one has to follow the rules and principles of Freemasonry such as self-improvement, self-awareness and social works. Earlier, this fraternity was majorly spread across only in Europe and America but now its Lodges can be found everywhere.

Upon becoming a member of Freemasonry, one can wear a variety of Masonic regalia. The most traditional and antique pieces are the signet ring and pocket watches. There are other pieces of jewelry and regalia as well like tie pins, pendants, cufflinks, aprons, gloves and many more. All the pieces of jewelry have important Masonic symbols and emblems on them.

Symbols present on the various types of regalia helps in identifying the degree of the Mason. It also symbolizes to which Lodge and order the member belongs to. All the brothers love to wear regalia that are embossed with special Masonic symbols as they enable in portraying their dedication, praise and pride for their brotherhood.

Apart from symbols, operative Stone Masons used to indent the stones they had prepared by using special marks. These marks were of two types. The first ones were done to indicate the orientation and position of the stone in the building together with a personal mark to identify the Mason who prepared it. The second ones were done to indicate the location where the stone had been extracted from. This Mark’s Mason degree can be traced to the back 1700’s where it was included as a ceremony in a Craft ritual. This degree is an explanation of operative Masons that worked in the construction of King Solomon’s Temple and also gives a dramatic representation which engages and impresses the candidates of this degree. It takes the knowledge to another level obtained in the Fellow Craft Degree.

Back from 1100’s, marks have been found on stones that were used in the construction of churches, cathedrals, and castles in Ancient Egypt and Europe. Stone Masons used to carve the stones for building blocks and also for decoration purpose. These marks helped in identifying the work of a particular Mason and were also an indication that the stone was accepted for use.
