Role of Methods of Interpretation in Heritage & Culture Industry
The interpretations used in travel and tourism
industry involves the language and the
meaning associated with it which can deliver the importance of the site to
various tourists through media and other sources of providing information. In
other words, we can say interpretation is making tourists understand the
importance and meaning of the heritage site. This passing of information is
necessary as it helps the tourist to understand hidden meanings on various
sites and by this they can appreciate the site more. This can be done by
various published literature available on the net or by tourist guides which
can tell the importance of each and every thing about that heritage and can
also share interesting stories regarding the heritage sites. But the authorities
have to make sure that the information provided is correct and right to best of
their knowledge. Sharing or passing of wrong information can defame the site or
even the state or country. Hence, the staff and other stakeholders should be
trained properly so that they provide only verifiable information.
The choice of interpretation techniques are influenced
by various factors like demography of visitors, type of museum, context etc.
There are various interpretation techniques such as role plays, reading material,
shows etc. The interpretation technique used in giving information depends upon
the type of art that is being displayed. The authorities discuss and come up
with the best technique which provides the full information and knowledge about the work of
art. In some cases a show or video might be suitable to convey the meaning but
it some a simple document would be enough to convey what the work of art means.
Various sources of interpretation are websites, shows, films guides etc.
With respect to Science Museum and V&A museum, the
methods of their interpretation techniques are different. Some of the
differences which are between the interpretations in these museums are
mentioned below:
- 1. The
mode of interpretation in Science museum is in the form of booklets, brochures,
scientific shows, various writings and manuals whereas in V&A it is in the
form of drama, audio-visual shows, curators helping the people, various guides
showing tourists around the museum, and other shows in a the are by which
audience can know the rich history behind the museum
- 2. The
environment in both the museums is quite different because of their
interpretation techniques. The environment of science museum is calm because
the interpretation is in the form of readings like manuals, brochure, various
signs and labels. In V&A museum the environment is vibrant because the
interpretation is by talks between the people and their guides and various
shows that are happening around.
- 3. The
target audience of both the museums is quite different and hence this makes
interpretation techniques also different for them. In science museum the people
with interest in science viz. physics, biology etc. and technology comes in
whereas in V&A museum people with interest in art and sculptures come in.
Both the museums are quite different in what they offer to the public and hence the interpretation techniques are different. Staff of the both the museums work hard to make sure that tourists find their museums interesting and have positive experience in the museum.
