Old Age - A Natural Process
‘Old age’ comes as a package bundling together different arrays of
advantages and disadvantages. There definitely is the divine quality associated
to being of this ripened age but not without its fair share of difficulties and
obstacles before the final lap in the race.
One such factor that contributes towards the pushing of individuals
off the edge is the ‘forgetfulness’ that slowly grips the mind of the elderly
individuals. Some forgetting small details which barely affect their daily
living whereas others forgetting the very basics of their life function… it is
not hard to handle the caregiving of the individuals who go through the process
of normal functioning but it is almost impossible to cope up with the
individuals who have lost their short-term and long-term memory.
It is important to understand that the newly acquired disability is
not their fault but a natural process of their ageing. However, when the
individuals forget the very basics of survival, then it is basically the brain
cells slowly decomposing and eating up all the memories. It is like formatting
a hard disk. Thus we must understand the aspects of Dementia. Although
Alzheimer contributes to about 60 to 80 percent of the Dementia cases, there
are also many other conditions that could contribute to Dementia and are
reversible such as vitamin deficiency and thyroid problems.
This disorder causes for the brain cells to be affected in a way where
they lose communication with each other and thus the feelings, thinking and
behavior are changed. Dementia types are differentiated with the association
that each type holds with the type of brain cells or regions.
There are many risk factors and preventive measures that can be
avoided and adopted to prevent Dementia. It is important to be careful, alert
and active in everyday life, not just physically but also mentally.
Most of all, we must develop a caring and understanding attitude
towards the individuals suffering from this atrocious disorder. It is important to develop a caregiving plan
and acquire a full and correct knowledge of the disorder so that the care giver
can do so in the right manner without aggravating the situation further into a
negative side.
Talking to a professional psychologist can help in so many ways. The
care givers of the Dementia individuals also need much support and counseling
as much as the Dementia individuals themselves. Psychological intervention is
beneficial and nurturing towards those who actually have the desire to seek
help.
