Rise of Magadha (Magadh Samrajya) – In the sixth century BC, 16 Mahajanapadas existed in India. Magadha was also one of those Mahajanapadas, but due to its geographical and political position, its prestige increased over time. Following are the major information about the dynasties that ruled Magadha –

According to the Puranas, the first dynasty to rule Magadha was the Brihadratha dynasty > Jarasandha. But according to Buddhist texts, the first ruler on Magadha was the Harayaka dynasty (Pitrihanta dynasty).

Magadha Times Haryanka dynasty (544-412 BC)
Bimbisara –
The first ruler of this dynasty was Bimbisara. Bimbisara became the ruler of Magadha in 544 BC at the age of 15. In the Matsya Purana it is called Kshatrojas and in Jain literature it is called Shrenik. He befriended Avanti Naresh Chand Pradyot and sent his royal doctor, Jivak, to his kingdom for medical treatment. He ruled the throne of Magadha for a long period of 52 years. He conquered the kingdom of Anga and made his son Kunik its ruler.

Ajatashatru -
In 492 BC, Kunik killed his father Bimbisara and became the ruler under the name of Ajatashatru. It fought for a long time with the Kashi and Vajji Sangha and in the end it subjugated them. It fought with the Lichchhavis in which it used elephants named Rathmusal and Mahashilakantaka. In the 8th year (after 7 years) of his reign, Mahatma Buddha attained Mahanirvana. At the same time, the first Buddhist council was held in the Saptaparni cave of Rajagriha.

Udayin -
It was Udayin who founded Pataliputra in the name of Kusumpur and made it his capital. He was a supporter of Jainism. But it was killed by a prince because of wearing a monk's garb. After this, respectively, Aniruddha, Mundak, Nag decade / audience became the rulers of this dynasty.

Snake Decade/Audience –
It was deposed by its Amatya Shishunaga and took possession of the throne.

Shishunaga Dynasty (412 -344 BC)
Shishunag -
He took over the throne of Magadha by deposing the last ruler of Haryanka dynasty. In this way a new dynasty Shishunaga dynasty was established on Magadha in place of Haryanka dynasty. He moved the capital of the state from Pataliputra to Vaishali. It annexed Avanti and Vatsa Sangha and merged it into the Magadha Empire.

Kalashoka / Kakavarna –
This again made Pataliputra the capital of the empire. In the 10th year of his reign (about 100 years after the Mahaparinirvana of Mahatma Buddha), the second Buddhist council was held in Vaishali. While roaming in Pataliputra, Mahapadmananda stabbed him to death. After this Nandivardhana/Mahanandin became the ruler of Magadha. He was the last ruler of Shishunaga dynasty.

Nanda dynasty (344-324/23 BC)
There were a total of 9 rulers in this dynasty, all of whom were brothers.

Mahapadmananda –
According to the Puranas, he was a Shudra, Sarvakshatrantak, Bhargava (an incarnation of the second Parashurama). In Jain texts it is called Napit Das. In the Pali texts it has been called Ugrasen (one who has a fierce army). In the beginning, he was the king/sardar of the gang of bandits. The famous grammarian Panini was its friend and courtier.

Ghannanda -
Greek writers have called it the agamemnon. Its commander was Bhadrasal. Its ministers were respectively – Jain Shaktal > Sthulabhadra > Shriyak. Chandragupta Maurya put an end to it with the help of Chanakya and after that Magadha Mar Maurya dynasty was established.
