How to Highlight Your Hair at Home

by Pathlie Lee Business consultant

There are plenty of horror stories that come from doing hair highlights at home. But plenty of people do it anyway. If you’re dying to experiment with your hair and want to use your hair color as part of the way you express yourself, your personality, and show the world who you are, make sure you do keep it safe. Here’s helpful advice on how to get those perfect highlights.

Get the Tools Ready

Before you start your highlighting adventures at home, you need the right tools and supplies. Do you have a foil comb? You also need sectioning clips, rubber gloves, hair tinting brushes, aluminum foil, color safe shampoo and conditioner, and a hairbrush. What about salon products that keep your hair moisturized? If you want to keep getting highlights on your hair or may even do a color change at some point, you need to keep your hair moisturized to prevent any damage. Stock up on salon supplies for that.

Pick the Highlights

Once you've got the tools ready, browse through hair highlight options. You’ll need bleach or dye. The product will depend on your hair type as well as on the condition and color of your hair. When you check out options, consider highlights that are two shades lighter than your base color. Going for something that’s too light, though, might look stark and unnatural with your complexion, so be careful. That’s why you’ll also need to pay attention to your skin tone and the undertone when you shop around. Once you’ve determined whether your skin has a warm or cool undertone, you can choose the best shade possible.

Learn Popular Techniques

There are several ways to highlight your hair. Understanding each option will help you figure out which one is the best option that you could try at home.

·       Foil Technique. This is when highlights are applied to hair sections that are folded into foils. This technique gives you better control where to put the color. You can also do multiple colors at the same time without worrying that they’ll bleed into all the different hair sections.

·       Balayage. To do this, you need to sweep a highlight color right along the surface of your hair. Do it with a freehand style. When you use this technique, it doesn’t saturate entire hair sections with the color. If you want natural-looking gradients, though, pick this option.

·       Color Melting. If you want to use multiple shades for smooth and blended highlights, this is a good option. You can use this to blend highlights with your natural hair color. This removes any harsh lines between different colors.

Detangle Your Hair

Whatever approach you’ll take to coloring your hair, you need to prep your hair strands before anything else. That is, you need to detangle your hair to make sure the session goes smooth and easy. You’ll have to wear old clothes, though, so it won’t be a problem if bleach gets on them. Lastly, make sure you follow the instructions when you mix the bleaching powder.
