If you own a period property and you need new radiators, you would probably not go for any of the modern stylised heater.  The chances are that you will go for a traditional look that is in keeping with the style of the house.

You are in luck.  Although there are radiators of every shape and size, modern vertical column radiators are still very much in vogue. Because they are made of any kind of metal with different kinds of conductivity, you can be assured that they are all fuel efficient.

They may be working in different ways to get the home heated up, some quickly and others slower, but there is not much difference in efficiency.

These days many of these particular radiators are made out of steel. These radiators are recognisable as they have a series of tubes which either run vertically or horizontally.  It all depends on whether you buy horizontal or vertical heaters.

Steel has a good heating ability and it is also a light metal.  If your walls cannot take the cast iron versions because they are heavy, the choice of steel is a good one. Steel is also cheaper than, say, cast iron or aluminium.

You may think that these radiators are plain, but they can be bought in any colour and finish.  If you should choose a matte finish to complement a period home, they will look every bit as nice as any other in this style.

Vertical column radiators are ideal for rooms with high ceilings.  They will heat these up much more efficiently than a panel radiator.  This is because the columns are heated individually and heat is distributed evenly.

These heaters are available in various sizes and before you buy you would do well to calculate which size you need to heat a space adequately.

There are many advantages to having a column heater fitted, especially in large rooms.  However, one disadvantage is that they are difficult to clean between columns.  However, this is outweighed by their efficiency.
