by Delhi Magazines Delhi Magazines

While spending all day at home due to the global pandemic, it has become common for kids to stick to their games and phones. Many kids indulge too much in their games that can be harmful to their eyes and bodies. It can be a cause of worry for parents. As a parent, you might even be worried about your kids seeing some inappropriate content that they shouldn’t be watching. If you want to avoid such situations, it is better to use parental controls and keep your child protected.

If your child is spending most of their time with Nintendo Switch, use this guide to add parental control to their favorite gaming console. You will need the Nintendo’s Parental Controls mobile app for this purpose, and it will let you control everything you believe should be hidden away or be limited from your kids. Here’s the guide to set up parental controls on Nintendo Switch:

Nintendo Switch Parental Control App

Using this app, you can create a time limit and bedtime restrictions on your kid’s Nintendo Switch. But first, you have to link the app to Nintendo Switch. Follow this step to do so:

  1. Download the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on your smartphone and create a Nintendo account.
  2. Tap on Next to receive a registration code.
  3. Now, press the Power button on the Nintendo Switch to power it on.
  4. Then, repeatedly press the Home button to unlock the Switch and navigate to its Home screen.
  5. From there, open System Settings, and then select Parental Controls from the sidebar.
  6. Click on Parental Controls Settings and tap on If You’ve Already Downloaded the App.
  7. Now, enter the Registration Code from the Parental Controls app.
  8. Click on OK to submit your code and click on Link to complete the procedure to your smartphone.

Once the app gets linked with your Nintendo Switch, use the instructions given below to set up and edit your parental controls at a later time.

Set Time Limits Using the App

This app will let you control and tweak different permissions on the Nintendo Switch. Use these steps to add limit the playing time:

  1. Open the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on your smartphone and go to Settings.
  2. Then, click on the Play Time Limit settings to open it and schedule a similar time limit for every day.
  3. You can also create different settings for each day of the week by enabling the Set Days Individually option. Then, tap each day of the week to set your time limit and bedtime alarm.
  4. Click on Save in the top-right corner to save the changes.

Your kids will receive an alert on their Nintendo Switch when they reach their time limit. This alert will continue repeating until the Nintendo Switch is put to sleep or the parental controls are disabled. If your kids play past the time limits, you can enable the Suspend Software option from the Play Time Limit settings. But remember that this option will wipe the unsaved progress when the device reaches its time limit.

Restrict Content

  1. Open the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on your smartphone and go to Settings.
  2. Then, open the Restriction Level settings and choose restrictions based on your child’s age by selecting Teen, Child, or Young Child.
  3. To tweak the preconfigured restrictions, select Custom followed by Restricted Software, Posting on Social Media, Free Communication, and VR Mode settings.
  4. Then, click on Save to save the changes.

Despite the content restrictions, you can choose to add a few Nintendo Switch games to a whitelist to keep them accessible for your kids. To do so, you have to launch that game on the Nintendo Switch and then visit the Settings option in the Parental Controls app. Then, click on Whitelist and switch on the toggle for the games you want to keep in your Whitelist. Then, click on Save.

Review User Activity and Time

Once you set up the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to your smartphone, you can start checking each user’s playtime summary. To do so, open the Parental Controls app and from the bottom-left corner of your screen, click on Time Played to check the time spent playing each day. Then, click on any particular day to view a breakdown of users and games played.

Use the Monthly Summary option to check the most played game by each user on the Nintendo Switch. You can also check the number of days that the user played the Switch in the last month.

Set Up Parental Controls Without the App

If your smartphone doesn’t have the space to install the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, you can set up some restrictions using the Nintendo Switch itself. But you will need the app to enable time limits or bedtime alarms through the app. Here are the steps for basic restrictions:

  1. Power on the Nintendo Switch and then repeatedly press the Home button to unlock the Switch.
  2. Now, go to the Home screen and open the System Settings.
  3. Then, select Parental Controls from the sidebar and click on Parental Controls Settings.
  4. Press the X button and tap on Next to dismiss the popup alert.
  5. Open the Restriction Level options to impose restrictions based on your child’s age by selecting Teen, Child, or Young Child.
  6. To customize the restrictions, select Custom and edit the Restricted Software, Content Rating System, Posting on Social Media, Free Communication, and VR Mode settings.
  7. Click on Next and create a PIN to save the changes.

Setting up parental controls will keep your children safe and will control their playtime.
