Most drivers obtain a GPS navigation system to keep them on the road. For real explorers who decline to confine their greatest ventures to the pavement, however, Garmin just proclaimed a rough, all-terrain GPS device that opens a whole new world of off-road exploration.

Garmin’s new 7-inch touchscreen Overlander provides everything most individuals expect of a traditional GPS unit, counting turn-by-turn directions throughout North and South America. What sets it separatcely, however, is that it’s a true, off-road-centric navigation device with many features designed to help drivers navigate as well off the pavement as on. Its purpose is built for anyone who likes their adventures as far from civilization as possible.

In addition to the paved highways and roads, it structures topographical maps of forest service roads, public land boundaries, dedicated 4×4 routes, activity trails, and waterways along with the extensive campground detailed and information land use data. Going the extra mile, so to speak, the service offers an included altimeter, compass, pitch and barometer and roll angles to navigate the roughest terrain. Overlander can even be modified for specific vehicles, permitting it to adjust navigation based on overall dimensions and vehicle weights to account for sharp curves, and bridge overpasses.

All mapping data comes to the pre-loaded onto the device for navigation of cell-signal-free via Garmin’s, personal data, free Explore app, and can be synced wirelessly across the desktop computers, Garmin GPS Device, and smartphones. The information can easily be shared with family and friends before heading out into the wild. A powered magnetic mount with a suction cup approvesthat the unit stays firmly in place when the going gets especially tough.

Like most typical GPS units, the Overlander is one-way affair set only to receive data. To make it a serious, go-anywhere emergency device, however, it pairs seamlessly with Garmin’s inReach satellite communicator. This allows the individuals to send text messages directly through Overlander’s touchscreen to anyone from anywhere on the planet. The Garmin Overlander won’t fall until August 2019. When it does, it will trade for almost $700.
