Fortress of Rajasthan

by Luxury Hotels Luxury Hotels

Rajasthan, called the land of desert, hosts a number of mesmerizing cities and astounding history and heritage. Like Jodhpur, a Blue uprising on the eastern edge of the Thar Desert is dominated by the striking fortress that towers above the city on a sandstone ridge. Discover luxury at the best palace hotels and 5-star hotels in Jodhpur.

Jodhpur is famous for the distinctive color of its buildings, a reminder of the Brahmins, who used to paint their houses blue to deter insects and keep the dwellings cool during the summer. Founded in 1459, the old city is encircled by an imposing wall and accessed through eight magnificent gates. A broad, open street connects Jodhpur’s modern center with the bustling heart of the old city, the Sardar Market, where a hubbub of bustling bazaars is tucked beneath the landmark clock tower.

Jodhpur is located in the symbolic knot between the Thar Desert and the Aravali forests, the mountain range that crosses from north to south the state. Marwar or Jodhpur departed from the founders of Bikaner and if a principality has been instrumental in shaping the current Rajasthan is Marwar. Despite the long history of the Blue City, it is still little known, and many wonder what to do in Jodhpur and spend many days. Jodhpur is well worth a couple of days, but more. On the one hand, it has the Umaid Bhawan Palace one of the luxury hotels in Rajasthan situated in royal palaces. The peculiarity of the imposing Umaid Bhawan is that the royal family continued sharing of the building with its exclusive guests.

The last palace of Marwar can be seen from many parts of the city, almost as present as Mehrangarh Fort, the historic seat of the Principality of Jodhpur. Built on the rock, sometimes the walls with mountain and robust foreign presence are confused, hides the most delicate latticework of Rajasthani architecture and beautiful palaces that rival Udaipur and Jaipur among the best in India. Musealization has a great chivalric epic and palatial loves that one day inhabited these walls.

Only from there you understand why Jodhpur is known as the Blue City, as a vast majority of the houses of the old town look blue or indigo once reserved for families of Brahmins.

Why Visit?

Encircled within the massive city walls, the majestic Mehrangarh Fort keeps watching over a maze of rooftops from its perch on a rocky mountaintop. Bathed in yellow light at night, this imposing stronghold has the reputation of being the best-maintained fort in Rajasthan, and the palace complex, with its network of courtyards, is well worth exploring.

Sprawled in the shadow of the mountaintop fort, the Blue City also boasts the Jaswant Thada, a beautiful marble crematorium constructed for the maharajahs in the 19th century.

Spreading out from the clock tower is a buzzing tangle of ancient alleys where traders barter for traditional handicrafts, from the baggy trousers named after the city to embroidered shoes, tie-dyed textiles, and lacquerware. Puppet makers and traditional spice markets jostle for space with the excellent antique reproductions for which the city is famous.

Part museum, part royal residence and part hotel, the Umaid Bhawan Palace, with its ornate, art deco design, offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the royals, with visitors even given the possibility of an enticing glimpse of the current maharaja, who still maintains a home within the palace complex.
