The Red Fort

The Red Fort was built during the Mughal Empire by Shah Jahan in 1638. It incorporates the Mughal architectural style and is made up of red sandstone. It is octagonal in shape and covers an area 254.67 acres. The monument is built using marble, floral decorations, and domes; a true mark of Mughal architecture. It is declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Qutub Minar

The Qutub Minar shines in all its glory with all the beautiful carvings and inscriptions. Built by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, it is 73 meters tall and has five storeys. The colors of the Qutub Minar are interesting to note as the first three storeys are made of red sandstone while the third and fourth storeys are made of marble and sandstone.

Humayun’s tomb

Humayun’s tomb is the first garden tomb commissioned by Humayun’s first wife, the empress Bega Begum. It is also made up of red sandstones and the design of the Taj Mahal draws inspiration from this tomb. As it is built on the banks of the Yamuna river, the whole monument is reflected in its water and is a beautiful sight to see. The whole tomb is decorated with intricate carvings that simply mesmerizes the beholder.

Nehru Park

One of the famous landmarks of Delhi is the Nehru Park blooming with greenery. As a part of the initiative called “Music in the Park”, there are morning and evening raga concerts held in the park. It’s a beautiful experience to hang out in the park in the sunny winter. There is also a life-size alloy statue of Vladimir Lenin who was the leader of the Great October Socialist Revolution.

National Rail Museum

To know about the history of Indian Railways, visit the National Rail Museum. It is an educating experience as one gets to learn the different types of locomotives that were used in India. It houses galleries and features simulations of coaches, diesel and steam engines. Purana Qila

One of the oldest forts in Delhi is the Purana Qila. It has three arched gateways and they are Bara Darwaza or the Big Gate, the south gate or the Humayun Gate and the Talaqi Gate or the forbidden gate. The fort has a mix of Rajasthani architecture in it as it includes overhanging balconies and pillared pavilions. Artifacts have been uncovered from the fort dating from the Mauryan era to the Mughal periods.
