by Mama Zen Mamazen
Giving birth to a child, juggling family tasks, worrying about the health of children and spouse, are common feelings a mother undergoes. But sometimes the woman is unable to bear the pressure and ends up anxious and worried because of the unknown. This anxiety takes a toll on the tender state of mind of a mother. Her heart often pounds and she feels she is choking on her fears and anxieties. The mother hides her anxiety symptoms behind a cloak at all times and refuses to recognise the outcomes of anxiousness.

Anxiety in motherhood is common and the more you worry the more it troubles you. The panic attacks can leave the mother jittery with a high blood pressure. Slowly the appetite starts to fall and even pleasurable activities become irritating. The feelings and thoughts that scare the mind become paralysing and sometimes the mother has a tendency to lose rationality of thought. She may start to avoid meeting others and the anxiety strikes at all odd places. At home, the park, store and wherever the mother goes!

The day becomes very exhausting and the nights disturbing. Don’t let this happen to you, get help right away to get rid of the fears!

  1. You need to comprehend why you are feeling so anxious? Are you worrying about what can go wrong with your babies, home or your health? Many times the mother shares her feelings and tells her children about her fears. The kids start getting stressed and develop concerns and fears of their own. The anxiety exhibition if it combines with handed down genes or learned behavior can be extremely detrimental for the children. Be very careful do not transmit any stress to your child!
  2. The anxiety in motherhood may have been manifested because of some underlying undiagnosed medical problem. Appropriate medications and treatment can reduce the anxiety to dramatic levels.
  3. Sometimes there are certain foods that aggravate anxiety. Symptoms of panic attacks can be easily recognised and you can take the prescribed medicines to reduce the signs. But this is not the permanent way out. You need someone to talk your heart out to, maybe a therapist who can deal with generalised anxiety of the mother and help her reframe her erratic thought processes. Once the thoughts are streamlined you may get immune to them and not get extremely rattled with the oppressive thoughts.
  4. Close people can help you pull out of the situation. Face your fears and understand that it is time to start concentrating on your child. Go for it!
  5. Anxiety can actually spread from one to the other. Don’t let the kids pick it. Its your to deal with not your kid’s. Concentrate on your child and let him explore all areas of life whether scary or not. Venturing out into the open doesn’t mean an accident always. Let your kids become explorative and not practice avoidance.

You need to understand that anxiety is a normal part of life and it’s natural to a certain extent. Flee only if the danger is real or else stay put and face the apprehension and nervousness. Face the anxiety!
