The Barcelona Cathedral is one of the most emblematic places of Barcelona. It´s real name is The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia and was constructed from the 13th to 15th centuries. Interestingly this is a “hall church” that means it is a church with nave and side aisles of approximately equal height, united under a single immense roof. Other examples of this kind of holy buildings are the Cologne Cathedral or the Salisbury Cathedral.
One of the things that makes this Cathedral so special is the 14th Century cloister with a central courtyard surrounded by a beautiful Gothic portico. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Eulalia, co- patron of Barcelona who has a far from pleasant history. The legend says that she was a young virgin who according to the Catholic tradition, suffered martyrdom during the Roman times in the city.
She was exposed naked in the public square and a miraculous snowfall in mid-spring covered her nude body. When the Romans saw that, they putted into a barrel with knives stuck into and rolled it down the street that now is called Baixada de Santa Eulàlia. The body of this martyr is entombed in the cathedral´s crypt.
If you want to visit the Cathedral you can do it for free from 8am to 12:45pm every day. If you come later you have to pay 6 euros to get into the building and you also can visit the museum, the chapterhouse, the choir and the rooftops. Then in the afternoon you can get inside for free again after4:30 pm.
The Cathedral is located in the heart of the BarriGótic (Gothic District) in Pla de la Seu, a big plaza always full of tourists and locals. In here there are several bars and restaurants and street artists and performers. If you are around you can visit all the museums and small alleys with a lot of surprises to discover.
