Baby Steps To A Gender-Neutral Society

Researching about gender-neutral schools for my niece’s nursery admission sent my thoughts wandering to an era where men and women were considered as separate entities. According to some philosophers this segregation was an attempt to create a balance amidst the chaos of cosmos. The two entities were created to compliment each other.

 

While the Martians and Venusians fought the battle of sexes, a large number of gender fluid people hid in their metaphorical caverns. Simon de Beauvoir talks about a thin line that separates sex and gender, while sex is defined by biology; gender is a social construct.  

 

Society decides the codes and norms for a particular gender, and those who fail to conform to the prescribed gender norms are rejected by the society. This leads to a systematic oppression of women and gender fluid people.

 

As many as 2.24 million crimes against women were reported over the past decade, and it was only in 2015 that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) even acknowledged the accidents and suicides of the third gender.

 

The plight of women, LGBT community and millions of untold heart wrenching-stories are a part of every individual’s subconscious, but why do we still live in a bubble? Why do we distance ourselves from this dark and ugly underbelly of our society? Why can’t we use education to fight the clan of sexists? Why can’t this awareness begin right from nursery school admission? Who is to be blamed for all the misery and is there still hope?

 

I believe that there is hope, but the hope lies not in passivity, rather embracing the reality and taking responsibility of one’s predicament.  One person can stop a nation, one idea can transform a society, and one step in the right direction can shatter the shackles of gender biases.

 

Education can play a vital role in breaking the claustrophobic constructs of gender. If you desire to be an agent of change, take baby steps; start small but start early. For your child’s nursery admission, choose a playschool that is gender neutral, an institution that works to destroy derogatory stereotypes.
