Templar
For fully
understanding the Knights Templar and the relevance of its degrees, it is
important to know about its origin. The Knights Templar or the Order of the
Temple of Solomon is considered as the most mysterious and suggested part of
Freemasonry. Knights Templar were the first true soldiers in the medieval
times.
In
the history, Knights Templars were known as the poor fellow soldiers of Christ
of the Temple of Solomon. The organization of Knights Templar was officially
recognized by the Roman Catholic Church between the year 1125 and 1130. They were the most famous Christian military
in the western lands which had been in the existence for almost two centuries
in the middle ages. They were the most skilled units which used to fight in
battles in the crusades. These knights used to dress in white mantles which had
a red cross on the front.
These
soldiers found the biggest treasure in the history, buried in the King
Solomon’s temple ruins and derived its name from the military unit in the
Crusades.
Order
and Degrees of Knights Templar
Knights
Templar exist both as an order of the York Rite or as a separate organization. Its
orders promote the concept of Christianity and chivalry besides the teachings
of Freemasonry. Knights Templar follows the standard degree system of
Freemasonry.
As
an independent organization, it confers only three degrees which are:
·
The Degree of Knight Templar
·
The Degree of Knights of St. Paul
·
The Degree of Knight of Malta
As
an order of York Rite, it confers three degrees along with one preparatory
degree. These degrees are:
·
The Illustrious Order of the Red Cross
·
The Passing Order of St. Paul
·
The Order of the Knights of Malta
·
The Order of the Temple
The
Illustrious Order of the Red Cross focuses on the lessons of truth and this
degree is considered as the transition from Royal Arch Masonry to Chivalric
Masonry. The regalia of this order is a seven pointed star in green color
within which a golden ring exists. This ring has a motto written over it “Great
is truth and it will prevail”. There is a red Greek cross present in the ring
which signifies Truth, Deity, Justice and Liberty. Before the Order of the
Knights of Malta, the Passing Order of St. Paul is conferred. The Order of the
Knights of Malta focuses on the lessons of faith. Its insignia is the Maltese
cross. The Degree Knight Templar or Order of the Temple focuses on the lessons
of self-sacrifice and reverence. It is linked to the traditions of the Knights
Templar of the medieval times and its motto is “In the sign you will conquer”.
Its insignia is the Cross and Crown.
Knights
Templar regalia
A
member has to be a professed Christian before being eligible to wear the Knights Templar Regalia. This is the
reason which makes it a controversial organization as it is often criticized
for being more of a Christian organization rather than a Masonic organization.
The
primary Knights Templar regalia include the classic Templar robes. Earlier, the
robes were white or sand colored and had a red cross on the left shoulder. But
in this modern era, the regalia include robes in beige color and a red
waistcoat as a reminder of the Red Cross used in medieval times.
